It's true. I had horrible back pain, then read "A Modest Proposal".

At the end, I realized, "He's not being serious!"

Back pain gone.

How to cure back pain in three steps:

1. Find a friend who cured their own back pain and get them to enthusiastically tell you what worked for them.

2. See a variety of practitioners, each with different views, each adamant their way is The Way.

3. Learn to spot sarcasm and satire.

Listen to your patients.

Already know the diagnosis? Listen to them.

Don’t agree with what they’re saying? Listen to them.

They’re expressing the same thing for the third time? Listen to them.

People want, and need to be heard, their perspective understood.

It’s important.

And it helps.

Also the new Denny’s on the corner just opened up.

This is not an endorsement.

Just a grand slam slugger of an observation.

I regret nothing.
I made shortbread cookies, and topped each with a whole maraschino cherry.

Not a small bit. Not a half. A full on whole maraschino cherry.

I believe in transparency, and knowing who your healthcare provider is when booking.

I try to create an environment where patients can feel comfortable enough to tell me that they’re not happy with the direction things are going.

But I will definitely be keeping my eyes open for this from now on.

Healthcare providers often really like to sound smart to our patients. I know I really did early on in my career.

At some point, though, I learned that admitting “I don’t know” to my patients and to myself helped me to be open to learning more.

And now I point that out to make me look wise.

Snow is falling.

And that leads to sidewalk and driveway shovelling.

And that leads to backs, arms, legs - the whole body - getting some good physical activity.

You might have been expecting a different message?

We’ve become so used to healthcare telling us what to worry about, and why you need to come in for [x] therapy.

But messaging about how we can be strong, adaptable, and resilient are just as important.

Especially when it comes to back pain.

Haven’t said anything about back pain today and you can’t do that on social media because then your follower count goes down and then you’re not growing your business and it’s all about growing your business right?

If you would have asked me in 2019 if we could effectively assess back pain virtually I would have said “get outta here.”

But with the advent COVID we pivoted to telephone and video consults, and quickly learned how well we can manage back pain, getting people feeling and functioning better.

Back pain affects people who…

- are immunocompromised

- live in far rural areas

- don’t have access to transportation

Virtual care for back pain opens options when in-person care is challenging.

It’s said that laughter is the best medicine.

Except for back pain. Then it can hurt.

That’s it. That’s the joke.

I really appreciate you sharing some of the information I post here.

Virtual care for back pain isn’t widely known, and spreading the word is helpful.

Thank you.
