There's a scene in Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cloud (2024) in which you're so locked in on a couple looking at their phone on a bus that the eventual jumpscare that follows is so frightening that it probably belongs in the top half of Kurosawa's career scares. Exceptional film

Easily one of the best written pieces about video games ever but also an incredibly important one that should be considered in future criticism's/understanding's of game design as a whole. Addiction *is* a bad thing, an addicting game isn't a great work of art. Highly recommend!!!

Been doing a lot of reading, rewatching and thinking in the lead-up to the Oscars and it's still bewildering how Clint Eastwood's Juror #2 isn't an award season favourite - it's so clearly The Best Thing released in 2024 and it's just buried and left to die. It's going to leave a great legacy!!!

Interested in the "critics shouldn't put themselves above movies" take going around at the moment. Are some critics not driven by a critical belief system? A personal understanding of art and what it means to them? Are there critics who are scared to be snobby? I'm genuinely interested

ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT (2024, Puyal Kapadia). One of the best looking films out there but also one who's inspirations are so apparent. Felt a lot of French New Wave in here, as well as nods to Akerman (I thought a LOT about News From Home) and Edward Yang. This scene in particular is so special

David Lynch really was the greatest artist of our time and the perfect man for one to love cinema through. No cynicism, no irony; just pure love for his works and the medium he lived in. Irony is a deadly disease that will kill all of us one day - that's what Lynch means to me.

the best part about writing about The Last of Us is that it doesn't matter that my piece of it Sucks So Bad because it's The Last of Us and it was never going to be my magnum opus

really coming around to The Apprentice as being pretty great. i enjoyed it on first viewing but on reflection it creates this really fun and intoxicating vibe while also having Seb Stan and Jeremy Strong give insane performances as two very evil people.

with the oscars coming up it's as important of a time as ever to question why do the game awards take place when they do? i know the game awards have stopped trying to place itself as a high art awards show since their inception, but their weird oscars riff feels so poorly created
