This is a macro nature photo I took of the Hellebore buds in our front yard. I planted them last year, and their displays of hardiness do not disappoint! It’s one of my favorite winter-blooming flowers. Deep forest green leaves rimmed in aubergine and violet, cradle two dark magenta buds. The largest bud faces right. Tipped upward, its outer petals catch light, revealing stomata flecks patterned like an unopened galaxy. The flower and leaves soften into a dark purple and pink background bokeh. Like many beautiful creatures found in nature, it is important to note that Hellebore is poisonous (it contains glycosides and saponins). I wear gloves while pruning because they’re so feisty. Hellebore’s tenebrous allure inspired my latest haiku: mountain creek thaws the poison garden stirs itself

Folks said it wasn’t the insane laughter or the teeth that #spooked ‘em, it was the eyes. One blue, almost human, the other scarlet, brimming with malevolence and despair. They called him Red-Eye Malachi and if he found you alone on a dark night, no-one would ever find you again.

In the bare poplar tree outside my window, Eastern Phoebes have been visiting. Ever-so-slowly, light is returning. I took this photo the other day while watching one gently surf the wind on a limb. Its dusky overcoat and creamy underside make this small puff of feathers look like a smoky cloud droplet against the winter green bokeh. From afar, the Phoebe's eyes look beady, but close up they have beautiful copper irises—so bright and full of cleverness. Here in the Blue Ridge Mountains, they symbolize the renewal of good luck and fortune for the year. Their famous fee-bee song is a harbinger of spring.

Jape Dhrgrt was a simple man. He worked, until very recently, as a salesperson for the Encyclopaedia Galactica. Having lost his job through lack of sales, in little part due to most of his own pitiful efforts, he had taken to flying around in his rickety old space ship in order that he didn’t have to return home to his wives, and their multitudes of children, and tell them that their only source of income had not only dried up, but had become so bereft of water that it had become, in effect, anti-wet, which was so dry that it actively repelled water to such a degree that rain storms would bypass his finances by a distance of, at the very least, a star system. Added to that, he had become aware that his favourite shop, where he bought varieties of leeches specifically grown to provide the tastiest of snacks while on the proverbial road, had closed down, apparently for the convenience of the customers, and the nearest shop, conveniently located some thirty-five light years away, had changed their opening hours, also for the convenience of their customers, to random single hours that equated to whenever the manager decided it was convenient for them. Conveniently, there was another branch, only a convenient extra fifty light years beyond the irregularly, but highly convenient, store, where, for your convenience, you could sit outside, in a convenient queue, talk through a convenient microphone to make your order, which would then, for your convenience, be completely misheard, lost, given something only vaguely similar and then, for the convenience of other customers, get propelled away by a convenient hyperspace shunt to a convenient part of the galaxy several hundred light years from where you wanted to be. Which wasn’t at all convenient, but it was better than getting the leeches sent by the inter-galactic post office, because that just opened up even more inconvenient problems.

This is a macro nature photo I took of a red hibiscus with golden anthers. The crimson background petals create a velvety bokeh which makes the globular anthers pop like tobiko roe. Red and gold always makes me think of the approaching new year. In the Caribbean, these gorgeous flowers bloom throughout every season. While it’s cold outside, I often think of spring. At 20,000 feet, the plane rattled, as a grinning gremlin crawled from the instrument panel. He tightened one bolt and loosened another, tapping a discordant tune on the hull.
The engine smoothed to a hum. It winked, vanished, leaving the pilot terrified enough to make it home.
