Many of you already know, but for those who don’t,
I’m running for Victoria city council!
Thanks to everyone who came out to my campaign launch, it was great to see so many friendly faces.

A 2021 study in Ontario found that, of those people who were employed when they died of an overdose, 1/3 worked in the trades. And in BC, it's half.
How opioid deaths are hollowing out the construction industry
Workers in the skilled trades make up a large share of overdoses fatalities, at a time when their labour is needed more than ever

This will kill people. Expecting people to be able to safely withdraw from fentanyl or other hard drugs *while being homeless* is an insanely high barrier that few can meet. Wet facilities don't work for everyone, but neither do dry facilities. We need to meet people where they're at.
And… I see that Councillor Gardiner, at COTW today, wants the city to explore converting "wet" sites to "dry".

I think this is a great addition to the region's supportive housing mix. The key word is ADDITION. I would oppose any effort to get rid of low barrier supportive housing—there's too much evidence that expecting people living in the street to "recover" is wishful thinking. People need homes.

Not something most people would feel brave enough to speak about at a public hearing.

Let’s keep all of these stories in mind when making housing decisions.

A legal group's interviews with survivors of intimate partner violence show that many stay in abusive relationships because they can't find affordable housing. Following the interviews, a report from ...

We need your help to tell transit commissioners that airport service should come alongside all-day 71 service, which would give Sidney residents and ferry riders an all-day direct downtown connection. Transit doesn't have to be zero-sum.

Thanks to @kristaloughton.bsky.social and others for making this point. Victoria is an expensive city to live in, and if we want people from all walks of life to be able to serve, council has to pay well. You shouldn't need to be wealthy to be able to serve.
Loughton: "I do think it's important to make the point that I don't believe going below $74k/year for Council pay works for anyone who's a renter who would like to serve at this table.... there's [3] renters elected at the CRD, and there's a reason for that."

"If we want the social housing tenants deserve, we need to build it — and we need to change the rules to make that possible."

Applies to more than just housing. Societally, we've largely made it impossible to build anything for a reasonable price, and we're literally and figuratively paying for it.

HUGE NEWS! Crystal Pool is moving to the old YMCA – this means we will have a pool open while the new Crystal Pool is constructed. This will speed up construction of the new pool, allow residents to swim and activate downtown. So thankful council and staff got this done! #yyj

What we say vs what we do

Say
🌎 Climate crisis: we need to rapidly decarbonize
🏘️ Housing crisis: we need more and cheaper housing

Do
🌎 Climate crisis: let’s put 154% tariff on cheap solar and 100% on cheap EVs
🏘️ Housing crisis: Let’s heavily restrict multifamily housing and tax it like it’s a sin
I first read that as 15.4%. Holy moly, we really don’t want solar in Canada.

Infill housing is climate action. More people need to live in the blue zones. Excellent to see @jasonthorne.bsky.social posting this; leaders, take note.
