Bombshell investigation shows that Hungary's Russia-alligned Orban regime has been running an espionage network in Brussels, recruiting and infiltrating among the highest levels of foreign governments.

There is no “social security” money.
There is not and never has been a fund.
No treasure trove.

Each generation pays for the last.
Taxpayers today pay for the pensions being paid today.
Taxpayers of Gen Alpha will pay for the pensions of the old millennials.
(Different overseas obviously.)

I suspect any group you choose by any criteria would say the same.
Even backbench MPs.
jaybut707.bsky.social
Perhaps.

But remember (1) about half of state pensioners don’t get the full amount and (2) it’s taxed. So the treasury gets back 20, 40 or 55% of the cost for those with additional income.
And 1.4 m households receive means tested pension credit because the can’t live on less than £1000/ month.

The point I made was that it would be better if consumers could choose which articles to pay for one by one instead of a bundled (and more expensive) offer “curated” by editors.

The problem with pay walls is the policy.
With newspapers, if you wanted to read an article you buy the paper. Ok you get a load of dross with it but that is the end of the transaction.
With paywalls, and I subscribe to three, you have to pay monthly, even when most days it’s wasted money.

Do you mean that Millennials are so feckless and stupid they can’t be trusted with money?
I don’t believe it.
Like every generation they are, for the most part, hardworking and responsible.
Like their parents, great parents and their children.

The regulator would be expensive though - about £¼ billion a year.
And the department £2 ½ b.

About the level of a major London NHS trust.

Not sure I agree. Lots of older empty nesters are put off downsizing because it means the money they need to live (because of the costs of living) would simply disappear in tax.
And the process of buying, selling and moving is very expensive and stressful.

I think the final solution will come from Reform.

And where’s the downside?

Killing the AI industry would increase employment,
help to slow down global warming and
perhaps bankrupt some billionaires.

Also make countries less vulnerable to cyber attacks by foreign powers.

As an alien, I find the whole thing bizarre.
In most democracies if a government budget isn’t voted into law one or both of two things happen.

1. The previous year’s budget is used pro tem.

2. The government is dismissed and a new one appointed - usually after an all out election.

As it was written (Jo 13:34).

Good thread pointing out inaccuracies and calling out people complaining that a country that decided to become a third country to the EU is being treated as a third country by the EU.

Someone just sent me Simon Calder's video whinging about the EU Entry-Exit System kiosk here, which is full of… let's call them inaccuracies, shall we?

It's not… accurate, it's not helpful, but it *is* an example of the very worst of British travel media rubbish.

It's properly unconscionable that the Home Office has created this situation. It should never have been allowed to happen and once it did happen it should have been immediately reversed.

The betting odds are for Mr Vance to win an election in 2028 if there is one. 9/4.

Fewer quotes for mid terms; perhaps the bookmakers think they will be cancelled because of the wars in Portland, Chicago, and other cities.
(But they are assuming the World Cup happens.)
