Scientists outline case for next-generation ocean iron fertilization field trials
A new paper argues that larger, longer studies with rigorous monitoring and clear safeguards are needed to accurately assess OIF as a potential long-term CO2 storage solution.

1/🏆 2006 💻 VENUS cabled observatory goes live + real-time ocean monitoring begins

On 8 February 2006, a large underwater telecommunications power bar—known as a node—was lowered to the floor of Saanich Inlet, a coastal fjord off Vancouver Island.

🎉 Feb 8 is the 20th anniversary of ONC! 🎉

What began as a bold experiment in 2006—a cabled observatory delivering live data from the depths of the Salish Sea —has evolved into one of Canada’s premier scientific achievements + a recognized Canadian Major Research Facility.

You know how antacids sometimes take a while to start working? New research finds that calcium carbonate minerals—the ocean’s version of antacids—might work on faster timescales than scientists realized.
Our Ocean’s “Natural Antacids” Act Faster Than We Thought - Eos
New evidence from New Zealand suggests that calcium carbonate dissolution occurs not just over millennial timescales, but over annual and decadal ones too.

Hitchiking in the ocean? 👍

A new study, including WHOI, traced oil-covered trash from the shores of Florida to a 2019 spill in Brazil! It shows that oil can hitch a ride on plastics to travel thousands of miles from where it was spilled.

An unseasonably mild winter is coaxing blossoms to bloom early in some Metro Vancouver neighbourhoods, as it experiences one of the warmest Januaries on record.
