Nothing is more frightful than real life — and in this case, the missing “zombie worm,” Osedax, in low oxygen waters, may signal future species loss and ecosystem decline, as climate change-driven, low oxygen zones spread in the NE Pacific Ocean.

Full story 👇
Zombie worms play a key role in recycling whale bones on the seafloor. Yet UVic’s @oceannetworks.ca hasn’t observed them in over a decade—an absence that may signal how expanding low-oxygen zones, driven by climate change, threaten deep-sea biodiversity. 🪱

An Ocean Networks Canada supported experiment has revealed the absence of the “bone devourer,” Osedax, on submerged whale bones, bringing scary lessons about climate change and potential species loss.

In horror films, unseen monsters scare us most. In the deep sea, it’s the missing zombie worms that worry scientists.

When whale bones were placed on the seafloor off #BC, researchers expected these bone-devourers to appear—but none did.
