Hello Bluesky! Now that we’ve got some new friends around, allow me to reintroduce myself:

I’m Jeffrey—sociology student at TWU, research assistant at UBC IDEA Lab, and co-lead of @cspsc.ca. Also into hiking 🥾 and songwriting 🎶

Excited to connect here 🦋
Group photo of the Canadian Social Prescribing Student Collective team at the 2024 Canada’s Social Prescribing Conference in Toronto. Eight team members, wearing name badges and blue lanyards, pose in front of an interactive display on social prescriptions. Me standing next to a vibrant ʻōhiʻa lehua tree with bright red flowers, growing out of the barren lava field in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Misty air surrounds the rocky crater landscape in the background. Me and three friends standing on a rocky mountain summit, smiling with Mount Baker towering behind us. The sky is bright blue with scattered clouds, and AllTrails stats overlay the image, showing our 15.3 km hike, 733 m elevation gain, and 3-hour, 57-minute trek.

Whether they're blaming vaccines and Tylenol, or selling dubious "remedies," what they're really doing is promoting the perception that families (and especially mothers) can prevent and treat Autism. And thus also the perception that people with Autism and their families don't need social support.

As someone working closely with this research, I see these (very adorable) robots not as a replacement for human care, but rather as tools to complement and enhance human interaction :)
Jeffrey Wong, a young Asian man with curly black hair, smiles while hugging LOVOT, a plush-style social robot with large round eyes. They are seated in a booth at the LOVOT Café in Tokyo, Japan, with patterned walls and a paper placemat visible on the table.

Thanks for raising this important point, @evafain.bsky.social.

Our study at @idea.nursing.ubc.ca explored older adults’ experiences w/ social robots, co-created with people with lived experience, to understand how they may support emotional and social wellbeing (commenting in a personal capacity):

Today is #WorldAlzheimersDay. At the UBC IDEA Lab, we believe our work matters because people living with dementia matter. Through co-created research, we’re working toward a kinder, more compassionate future for dementia care 💜

Today is #EmancipationDay, marking the beginnings of the abolition of slavery in “Canada” in 1833. This history is not well known—I learned all about slavery in the US but didn’t even know that there’s similar history here until today. Hope you’ve learned something new too.

Yes! There’s lots of exciting social prescribing work happening in Canada too. See @cisp-icps.bsky.social and @cspsc.ca, the SP student movement that I’m part of :)

Troubling to see federal cuts targeting Indigenous Services and scientific research under PM @mark-carney.bsky.social. Share your voice and push for a budget that reflects our values: canada.ca/yourbudget

Oddly these are Trump's priorities for Canada. Defence, RCMP and Border services are whitelisted, needing few if any cuts. But what should be our priorities: Indigenous reconciliation, Vets, Science and our standing in the world --- are cut to the bone. 7/x

Haha thanks JBI, will keep you posted on how it goes! I’m excited to learn from @uvicnursing.bsky.social CEiHC facilitators. Is there anything that I should prepare or read ahead of time to get the most out of the training?

Curious to hear more about that—what if the second reviewer checks the AI extraction for accuracy as the authors of that paper suggested?
