“Accepting that America is not longer a functioning democracy should change how we think about the future. Does America face a decades long shift away from democracy, as in Franco’s Spain, or a quicker rebound?“
New, from me:
America is no longer a functioning democracy. It is a competitive authoritarian system, hurtling rapidly toward authoritarianism.
This was a hard piece to write but we can't move forward if we don’t acknowledge where we are.

The problem with this is that some leftists are children, with childish expectations and childish fantasies and childish political analysis.

In my opinion, it’s better to have prominent progressive politicians marching with labor than not.

And if you agree - guess what, our opinion is correct. 😉
The problem with this is that they're both elected officials with real power that they refuse to use on behalf of workers, so they engage in performative solidarity instead of living up to their half of the inside-outside strategy.

Brazil’s former Dictator Bolsonaro will begin serving his 27 year prison sentence for plotting a coup in his country.

If only Merrick Garland had gotten the job done when we had the chance and sent the orange felon and his insurrectionists to jail where they belong. Scumbag.

Any one of us could be in the next apartment building that ICE raids in the middle of the night.

Any one of us could be on the next boat that Trump bombs on a whim.

Any one of us could be detained for hours despite being a U.S. citizen.

Authoritarianism hurts all of us.

Stop this war criminal NOW.

This is Trump’s version of Mussolini invading Ethiopia or Hitler invading Poland.

The last thing we need is the US starting a hemisphere-wide war of aggression.
Trump on the land strikes he's planning: "If the come in through a certain country, any country ... I hear Colombia is making cocaine ... anybody doing that and selling it into our country is subject to attack"

Conservative man speaking about his daughters:

“I let them vote how they wish.”

“They are mislead (sic) by propaganda“

“I must now suffer *their* childish and frankly, rude behavior”

“Liberalism really is a mental disorder.”

Conservatism is a sewer of entitlement, ignorance, and self-delusion.
Guy voted for a rapist and just can’t figure out why his daughters are mad at him. Clearly it must be something wrong with them.

Too bad Hakeem Jeffries declared an impeachment push for Hegseth of the table.

Too bad Democrats in Congress are useless.
Dems should hound Rs relentlessly: Will they exercise oversight on these extrajudicial killings in a serious way? Trump and Hegseth are laughing in Congress' faces. Will Rs really debase themselves to shield the likes of *Pete Hegseth* from scrutiny? Seriously? 4/4

The media is defining deviancy down by emphasizing the illegality and cruelty of the second strike. Already there are Republican lawmakers using the contrast between the first and second strikes to make the first seem acceptable.

We must not forget that the first strikes are also war crimes.
It's great that reporting on the double tap has spotlighted the abject criminality of this Administration.

But don't forget: Venezuela is not waging war on America or Americans, and the men killed were not combatants.

The first strike was every bit as illegal as the second.

An excellent article, well worth a full read.
"Just a few years ago, conservatives struggled to navigate a world in which everyone was expected to pay fealty (whether sincerely or not) to the idea the US could be a multi-racial democracy in which equality was the goal toward which we all strove. But now, they’re pretending nothing of the sort."

Yet these traitors dub Mark Kelly and other lawmakers who call for the rule of law unpatriotic.

War is peace.
Freedom is slavery.
Ignorance is strength.

The Republican Party has turned the world upside down and sold out their country and its ideals, all for an orange clown and a few coins. Sad!

The Democrats should impeach Jeffries and find new leadership.
For some reason Democratic leaders seem to prefer telling voters what they won’t be able to do, rather than what they’d like to do.

If Hegseth ordered a war crime and lied about it, shouldn’t Ds try for impeachment? Put Rs on the spot. They might get a few defections.

Q: You said that second strike was in accordance with the law of armed conflict, but the Navy's own manual says that firing on survivors from a wrecked vessel is an example of a war crime

My friends, there is no ‘Department of War’ or ‘Secretary of War’ in America.

There is a Department of Defense and a Secretary of Defense.

Neither has the right to murder.

“Kill them all” is a confession to murder under American law.

If Democrats want to regain working people, they must disavow Big Money.

They must hammer economic populism — and have a laser focus on the cost of living crisis in America.

There’s no way the party can speak for or represent the working class in America if it's beholden to corporate interests.

“For example, order to fire upon the shipwrecked would be clearly illegal.”
"… in the present instance, it was perfectly clear to the accused that killing defenceless people in the life-boats could be nothing else but a breach of the law. As naval officers by profession they were well aware …."
