To my nonbinary, agender, genderqueer, and otherwise off the binary friends & siblings: You are loved, you are valued, you are important to our community, you've been here longer than the tyrants, and you will still be here when their bones are dust and the names of their false gods are forgotten.

This ostracon shows the hieroglyphs for ‘life’, ‘stability’ and ‘power’. Look at the grid system that the artist used to draw the signs at the correct proportion. 🤩

Love this writing board from ancient Egypt which shows how an apprentice scribe was practising writing hieroglyphs.

What is hieratic? 📜
Hieratic is a cursive script based on ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. It’s written with ink & a reed brush on papyrus, leather, or other surfaces.
This handwritten script was used as a faster way of writing.

so much of teaching is teaching students that they are worth taking seriously, that they should take themselves seriously, that the world is in their hands, that they are up to its challenges

Had a wonderful time at the BAJA conference! 🥰 So many great and inspiring talks by early-career scholars. ✨ Also happy I could share my research on expressions of emotions in ancient Egyptian letters. 📜

In which direction are hieroglyphs written in? 📜 🔎

- Horizontal line: left to right or right to left
- Vertical column: left to right or right to left (always top to bottom)

How do you know where to start? 👇🏻

What are hieroglyphs?
Hieroglyphs, meaning ‘sacred carvings’, describe an ancient Egyptian script that originated around 3200 BCE. The signs were mostly carved in stone and used on temple & tomb walls, and on other objects such as sarcophagi, statues and stelae.

Once you get used to it, alt text is a lovely part of posting images. It's great to know that more people can enjoy them & it's also a chance to think about what's special about the image you've chosen. Describing what you love about that sunset, that fascinating building, that particular stone 😍
Also, alt text is not a caption for a credit or a joke response to the image. It gives screen readers the info to give to their users.
You need to describe the image for people who can't see it. What do you want them to know about the image you've chosen?
Using it for jokes is doubly exclusive
I'm posting and reposting a lot of things about alt text today & I have been responding to people with great posts, that I can't share because they don't have alt text. But I'm getting to the point where I'll stop following people who post a lot of images without alt text.
