Carney's "grand" bargain - the feds support a pipeline if Alberta provides even more subsidies for carbon capture - is a win-win for wealthy oil and gas CEOs, but no one else.

If this is the final outcome of COP30, it is a punch in the gut to all those nations most vulnerable to rising seas and ever-increasing heat. Without meaningful action on the main cause of climate change, COP30 loses all credibility.

After the new COP30 text leaves out reference to a "fossil-fuel roadmap", a group of nations led by Colombia 🇨🇴 has launched a new push against fossil fuels.

The list of 24 nations supporting the “Belem Declaration for transitioning away from fossil fuels” includes:

It's day 12 of #COP30 and finally we have movement on the text.

In summary, it looks like the small minority of opponents of transitioning away from fossil fuels have been allowed to run roughshod over this text.

But let's dive in...
It's day 11 of #COP30 and it's the second dawn without a new text.

Looks to be another fairly quiet day today until we get that draft text.
It's day 10 of #COP30 and several media are reporting more than 80 countries support a roadmap for transitioning away from fossil fuels.

Meanwhile, we're waiting on new text that was promised to drop this morning...

It’s very hard to see what the opposition is to a roadmap beyond ‘we just want to burn lots more fossil fuels’. It’s just a promise to discuss a roadmap and it’s for a ‘transition away’ from fossil fuels, not a full phase out.

Carney’s calamitous course causes consternation at climate summit
Canada arrived at COP30 with empty hands, expressly moving backwards on almost every climate policy we’ve put in place since Paris.

In a world demanding low-carbon energy, an oil pipeline is a risky multi-billion-dollar, multi-decade gamble.

And without strengthened industrial carbon pricing, a new pipeline would continue to increase oilsands emissions — even with the Pathways carbon capture project.

REPORT: If governments were to implement the promises they made in 2023, to triple renewables, double energy efficiency, reduce methane by 2030 & beyond, they could
✅ significantly cut projected warming - by 0.9˚C
✅ cut warming rate by a third by 2035 and halve it by 2040

At #COP30 82 countries from across Europe, the Pacific islands, Latin America and Africa are calling for a fossil fuel phaseout roadmap

Of course Carney is aligning Canada with Trump & Saudi Arabia in opposing it

So the only thing Carney knows how to do is double down on fossil fuels

He's using public resources to develop infrastructure that he *knows* will quickly become stranded assets and cost taxpayers steeply

I'm also longing for the day that Canada's journalists become climate literate

Carney's climate backsliding 'earned' Canada a fossil award at #COP30

That's not the leadership Canadians want or need
At COP30 Canada just got awarded the fossil of the day — first time since 2014 (the harper years). Clear sign of how Carney’s pro fossil fuel agenda and backsliding on climate policy is being noticed internationally.
