So, people who strive to improve to improve health and welfare in the context of nicotine:

Are you prepared to get less wrong, together?
Yup. Best approach is having diversity of views within decision making apparatus. Look at how dysfunctional communist decision
making structures were.
Indeed!

But we're still going to end up needing to see the opthalmologist and the dentist before we're through.

I almost fell(afel) over reading this.

I'm glad @adamrothman.bsky.social's day jobs keep him pretty busy because this stuff provokes audience pita/pity.

Do you love to get less wrong?

@ourworldindata.org can scratch that itch.
A decade ago, the most frequent opinion among smokers was that vaping was less harmful than tobacco. But ten years on, the opposite is true: over a third say that vapes are just as or even more dangerous. You can see this shift in the chart.

The scientific evidence is clear that this is incorrect.

One of the most bewildering things in this hellscape are the people who are *excited* for a civil war.

Most people who die in wars aren’t going out like Master Chief in a blazing firefight. They’re dying from disease, hunger, and the consequences of lost infrastructure.

Tuesday Wisdom.
We have to start having students write timed essays in a Blue Book again. I don’t see a way around it.

I imagine we will eventually develop a reliable way to detect LLM usage in an essay, but the tools available now are unreliable and it’s unethical to tank a student on that alone.

Pen, paper.

There are many people for whom the charts below are very far from #ActualWinning.

They might be right.

But no one, nor group, has the monopoly on correctness or stupidity.

So, how can we determine if this is #ActualWinning or #TiredOfWinning?

Can't wait to read this (the whole issue looks so good!).

And it reminded me that I was lucky enough to have Prof Kamensky as my TA in spring semester, 1991!
Only 24 years of Eliza Schuyler’s life were spent with Alexander Hamilton, Jane Kamensky writes. What would it mean to write her into the history of America’s founding?
