I wonder how many of these “pathogens aren’t REAL” folks ever drink beer

Or put cream on their athlete’s foot

Or use prescribed insulin

I made the critical error of watching a Russian production of The Nutcracker on YouTube.

Everything was lovely until they rolled out the Arabian dancers in head-to-toe brownface.

Sending solidarity to people who survived trafficking. Please guard your peace & stay far from online spaces since folks are sharing "juicy news tidbits" without any regard for how it affects us.✌️

So much love to any one affected by that horrific shit. Be glad when news moves on to "next thing"🦵💩🔥

Another reason why fields like anthropology are important, contrary to growing opinion:

It’s a lot harder to get away w blowing away Venezuelan fishermen with missles if the general population has thought about countries and cultures other than theirs. It takes that fisherman from abstract to real.
The US aggression against Venezuela is naked imperialism. All pretext has been exposed as farce. An invasion would cause tens of thousands of deaths. Every sane person must oppose this madness.

This is an appreciation post for Drosselmeyer, the ultimate Cool Uncle and my favorite character in The Nutcracker.

We should all have a very cool and mysterious honorary uncle who spoils his nieces and nephews and also travels the globe going on wild adventures and sourcing enchanted toys.

Periodic reminder of the foods my microbiology professor warned us to not eat, or at least be vigilant about:

- produce that’s too delicate to be decently cleaned without ruining it (sprouts, raspberries, similar)

- produce with knobby texture that can hold bacteria (cantaloupe!)

In Georgia, the state has made "catastrophic" cuts at DHS, citing an $85 million deficit.

A provider described one result: a mom who relapsed last week. "Visits with her child were keeping her sober, but transportation services had been cut."

Georgia is sitting on a $14.6 *billion* budget surplus.
Department of Human Services cuts services to families to deal with deficit
As Georgia's Department of Human Services struggles with a massive deficit, Commissioner Candice Broce pleaded with state lawmakers for more funding.

LITERALLY might be the best horror film I’ve ever seen. WOW. Wow.

No jump scares, gore, or screams.

You can watch it here with your phone, but it’s best on a bigger screen in a dark room.

Men use generative AI more than women (50% vs 37%).

Beware when a population that has outsized power relative to their outgroup (men, billionaires, etc.) flocks to something en masse. It’s about to be used to further disempower others.
AI boosters are fine with this. They're fine with the child porn, they're fine with the fascist slop, they're fine with the environmental damage and the unprecedented theft.

They're fine with all of it, because reading and writing their own emails is just too hard.
AI tools are being used to subject women in public life to online violence
As digital technology becomes ever more sophisticated, AI tools are increasingly being used to target woment with abusive and misogynistic onine content.

There is a tremendous opportunity for a brand new generation of media outlets to rise up right now because many news outlets that spent decades painstakingly building their credibility are seeing it torched by bootlickers with incredible speed.

Don’t give up.

Keep writing, keep reading, keep making weird art.

A boom of AI hallucinated content will (probably, IMHO, etc.) mean a subsequent hunger for authenticity and originality. If there’s nothing out there but code-generated crap, an interesting mind becomes more valuable.

Also! The Danish team on this “trial” are notorious for either not understanding how to do their stats, or more likely, doing them in a misleading way to drive the conclusion they want.

Their dedication to p-hacking is almost impressive.

It seems to be about the safety of the vaccine rather than its effectiveness, but both are already well-established, and to undertake such a study in a population where almost 1/5 of the adult population has a marker of infection seems extremely risky”
