In college a friend played a vocals only version of Pet Sounds for a group of us. We just stood there in his room listening silently. One of those moments when music just completely blew my mind.

I spent months in my car driving singing along, trying to comprehend harmony.

Just heard the resounding news that my story "Desperate Times, Desperate Crimes" from The New England Review 45.3 has just won a Pushcart Prize. My thanks to Jim Gavin at Tiger Van Books who did the heavy lifting on this one, and Carolyn Kuebler at NER who did the fine tuning.

Stephen Dedalus said "It's an age of exhausted whoredom groping for its god." Dude nailed it.

I'm sorry to say that at the moment we are not taking submissions. Tiger Van is a very small operation and I need to take some time to figure out if we can expand. If we do start taking submissions I will make an announcement.

Fellow authors, I love you, and I know it feels like we don’t have a choice, but B&N and Am*zon both scheduled sales this week to preempt Independent Bookstore Day, a hugely vital source of income for indie bookstores. Please don’t promote their sales; please promote your local indie this week.

Lots of great stuff at the LA Times Book Festival this weekend, including this great panel with @loubeard.bsky.social. The festival is a great place to support independent presses like Tiger Van Books. Make a day of it, drink some wine, descend into Dionysian mayhem, acquire a tote bag...

This memoir is so timely, heartbreaking, hilarious, inventive, kaleidoscopic, and instantly canonical as a vision of Hollywood...I don't know how @specktor.bsky.social pulled it off, but very glad he did. The man knows of what he speaks. I highly recommend purchasing a copy today. #riverrun

I will always hold it against the fake money people that they appropriated “crypto” from cool things like your Sasquatches and Mothmans. They should have called their dumb shit something like Goofbux

“You’re a loser. Because you’re dead inside and you can’t live unless you make everything else dead around you.”

Fast Eddie knew the score.

The best…also i can recommend @specktor.bsky.social forthcoming memoir for a million reasons not least his correspondence with Hazzard as he tried valiantly to adapt Transit of Venus for the screen.

Best book of the year so far is @loubeard.bsky.social’s Hollywoodski, a novel in short stories about the life of Dale Davis, a “faded” screenwriter working on the margins of Tinseltown. It’s lovely and elegiac and hits so many details about its demimonde just right. Fantastic, funny and brilliant.
The cover of Lou Mathews’ new novel Hollywoodski, a humorous and melancholic account of a “faded” screenwriter’s career in Hollywood.
