"Hm. Nice. Your mother's gonna be irrationally upset about this one though"

"And THIS one's FUCKED UP with some CITRUS bullshit"

Turns out Trump moved to San Francisco in 1977, bought a house for $82,000 that’s now worth $2.4M, and put “IMMIGRANTS WELCOME HERE” and also “NO UPZONING” yard signs in the front yard
Trump: If we build more housing, the price of homes will go down, and homeowners will lose their wealth.

I assume the reason parental controls in iOS suck such absolute shit is Apple execs all have three literal human nannies for each of their children and send them to $75k/yr schools where computers are banned within a 500ft radius.

First day of holiday break is going FANTASTIC thanks for asking.

What's exciting about this is Kat has an understanding of contemporary media far too many otherwise smart people either lack entirely, or they think they're somehow built different. If you are to the left of Stephen Miller, even if you're not talking politics, Grok is going to downrank you.
This has always been a Bluesky-first campaign. But as of today, we will no longer be using Twitter. At all.

And I'm calling on other candidates to follow suit.

really cannot be emphasized enough that bari weiss has literally never done journalism. i don’t mean that in the pejorative sense. i mean that in the “has never performed the job she was hired to do” sense
One explanation for Bari killing the story is that she did so as a public act of fealty to the administration. But another is that, as an inexperienced journalist, she doesn’t understand that a refusal to go on the record is a kind of comment in and of itself

Is your home about to be invaded by people who say "ALEXA. PLAY CHRISTMAS MUSIC." even though you've never owned an Alexa? Are you desperate to avoid the seque of "Last Christmas" to "Dominick the Donkey" that only an algorithm could love?

I have a gift for you.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

I'm writing bits of code again so I resurrected and slightly updated my creaky tmux and vim setup and, man alive. Like trading in a too-tight set of trendy slacks for a well worn, threadbare in spots pair of jeans.

All the Bari news this week is delicious confirmation at how much she sucks at her job but that’s beside the point. The Ellisons are creating a hermetically sealed media ecosystem where news clips of tasteless billionaire morons show up between AI slop/ads on TikTok. Not even Murdoch managed this.
Americans are tired of what coastal elites have been shoving down their throats, so I think elevating fresh voices like the vice president, the head of one of the most valuable companies on the planet, a Times columnist, and a Jeffrey Epstein associate who teaches at Harvard is a risk worth taking.

Much like our barbecue, the UNC system is one place where North Carolina is truly world class. It's being dismantled by a handful of craven rightwing simpletons.

UNC cuts all six area studies research centers, effective 2026
As part of the University's plan to make $70 million in budget cuts across the institution, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations Nate Knuffman projected that cutting 14 centers and institutes in total would save a forecasted $7 million.

i was reading this at the bus stop and having complicated feelings about it, and the bus came and i got on and sat down and i noticed the guy next to me was watching tiktok (you know, like everyone on the bus), and i glanced over, and it was a jamelle bouie video

so ok universe you win this time
i have said this before but if you are actually interested in influencing people beyond a narrow circle of too-online journalists you will be making direct to camera videos on tiktok, instagram and youtube. if you primarily post on text-based social media then you're just dicking around.

For a long time, that was THEE affect that signaled you were a Real Journalist: being savvy and smart enough to know that people with principles were quaint, pitiable little curiosities. And if those people happen to be women, well then they're also just downright childish.
i’ll add that what substantively seems to annoy silver is the existence of people with principles

The 25th anniversary of Bush v Gore is today. The conspiracy mongering & corruption of the GOP has been brewing for a long time.

Roberts, Barrett and Kavanaugh were all on Bush's legal team, where they pushed unfounded legal theories. SC justices were already enmeshed in voter fraud myths.
Here's Sandra Day O'Connor endorsing News Max levels of voter fraud conspiracies in the 2000 election.

The hinge
25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.
