If he gets elected mayor, Mamdani’s support for banning parking near intersections citywide could undo a bureaucratic knot at the Department of Transportation, whose leaders have vigorously pushed back against the movement fighting for the safety measure.

The next mayor will have to overcome a deeply entrenched bureaucracy opposed to the common-sense policy.

Trigger warning.

“In crashes, SUVs are more likely to strike vital organs in the core of adults’ bodies & heads of children. Hitting pedestrians above their center of gravity means they’re more likely to be knocked forward & down and then be driven over.”

Plus more likely to hit in the 1st place.

🧵 (1 of 6) Community members recently placed memorial ghost bikes in honor of friends and loved ones.

This includes new memorials for loved ones who were killed while bicycling sometime in the past year and a half, plus previous memorials that were in need of care and replacement. ❤️‍🩹

With a track record like this, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that VIP plate 632 in @mayorbowser.bsky.social’s DC didn’t stop when I was in the (4-way stop) crosswalk with my kid this morning.

Very small indeed! Hope you made it out without too many off-list purchases!

The circumstances of this fatal crash are absolutely horrific and heartbreaking. I read every MPD press release on fatal traffic crashes, and this is one absolutely broke me. 💔😭

Car crashes are the second leading cause of death of American children. And it's entirely preventable.

Education and behavior change alone won't stop it. A major problem is road design.

I'm so glad the issue is reaching more mainstream conversations. www.sciencefriday.com/segments/kil...
The Lack Of Science In Road Design Is Deadly
Are traffic engineering decisions based on evidence-based research? Not as much as you might think.

Armstrong Mbah, Shalom Joy’s father, “No parent should have to bury their child & then watch the person responsible walk away without real consequences.”

My heart breaks for Sky’s & Shalom’s families today. It’s incredible painful to have so much taken away & see nothing change. wapo.st/4cHpQml

I’ve been saying this since 2021, when Allie was killed in a crosswalk and the driver got a ticket (I think. I haven’t heard it definitively from MPD). Here we are, 4 years later…

Whenever I hear someone say they *need* a big SUV, I think of all the things I’ve hauled in our Honda Fit: flooring, furniture, so much mulch. Today: cargo bike.

Twice as many children die in car crashes than from all pediatric cancers combined. This does not count the long term health effects of breathing exhaust, brake and tire particles or the loss of physical activity and independence from living in a world hostile to traveling outside of a car.

Speed is a major reason why 40k people die on US roads every year - people like Tammy’s son Conner. Please sign…for Conner.
