As a doctor, I am horrified by what I saw at the Whipple detention facility in Minneapolis.

No medical protocols.

No real medical care.

No nurse on site when I visited.

No beds. No real blankets. Extremely cold temperatures. Minimal food.

These conditions are inhumane and unacceptable.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

A FANTASTIC review by @kermodemovie.bsky.social of Melania.

An Amazon bribe

A piece of handsomely mounted crypto-fascist propaganda

& then you realise it's a heist movie in which a crime family break into the seat of power and steal the cutlery whilst destroying democracy

A post from @lmbd1418.bsky.social brought this to mind. A good book and a surprising read too. Plus there’s a bonus; it will frighten off clueless gammons who know b*gger all about…. well anything.

From Katja Hoyer’s (currently not of this parish) Zeitgeist substack. A wee bit outside my usual reading however I’m going to pop it on the wish list.

These should now all be live on eBay:

The two hardbacks are particularly nice. Just saying.
Looking to shift these as well, on the basis that I've gleaned all I can from them.

Will bung them on eBay in the next day or two.

Hilarious. And unsurprising. These people (Reform)
are liars and they are only out for themselves.
Former Conservative James Evans has now joined Reform.

In his speech in Newport, where he was announced, he attacked the media for pointing out his former criticism of Nigel Farage's party.

I finished watching Smiley’s People a few minutes ago. I have to say not as satisfying as Tinker, Tailor. The odd characterisation of Toby Esterhase did not help.

Specifically, this is for your street clothing that has been exposed to tear gas in smoke/aerosol/dust/particulate form.

Remember the incident where DHS claimed officers shot a guy because he attacked them with a snow shovel?

Yeah. It didn't happen. They shot him through the door of his own home. And then arrested him. And then lied about it. Again.

And they almost shot some kids in the process.
They just blindly shot through the fucking door.

"Additional photographs show damage consistent with a bullet fragment lodged in a bedroom wall down the hallway — suggesting it traveled between a mattress and a portable crib in a room where several small children sleep."
"Photographic evidence from the shooting scene of a Venezuelan man by federal agents last month in Minneapolis supports the account of witnesses there – and appears to undercut the narrative provided by federal officials." www.startribune.com/ice-raids-mi...

I've given my long-neglected fiction blog a bit of a refresh and posted a new article - one I've been working on in spare moments for a couple of years now, on one of my favourite films and its relationship to the 1970s disaster film boom

The Devil At 4 O’Clock and the disaster boom
In 1961, almost a decade before the golden age of the disaster film, one film appeared that presaged almost every element of the main cycle of the 1970s and the subgenre’s revival of the late 1990s…
