Just curious, is your question directed at ghosts that might be in the audience?

October 10th – Lionel Johnson – ‘The Dark Angel’ (1893)

Not a huge fan of religious material, but wrestling with inner demons is interesting.

I think what bothers me is works like this always resolve by just saying their "divinity is stronger" or some such. Not very satisfying.

A new Halloween story starts one week from today. A story told one post a day leading up to Halloween!

Even rats have their scary legends of monsters, including that of The Scratcher. Is it hunting Brick and Kammers?

Stay tuned!

👻🎃UNCANNY HALLOWEEN COUNTDOWN: DAY 8🎃👻

Today’s earful of eerie comes in the form of Case 8: The Black Dog of Ibrox ⚽

Did everybody see the same creepy canine? Was it real or paranormal?

Fair enough. It still paints a strange picture to me. A happy dog stretching out while people are terrified of a stranger they are eating with.
joedunlavy.bsky.social
The poem is mostly lost on me. I like the idea of the dog not being upset by the whole thing. Reinforces my thought that these people treat their guest terribly. If the dog likes him, then maybe he's just a nice guy with a superficially uninviting look to him.

Emily Brontë – ‘And now the house dog stretched once more’ (1839)

I have no idea what's happening in this poem. Why does everyone hate that poor man? Why is the title concerning a dog who appears in the beginning and is then not mentioned again?

Hmm it seems modern myths are immune to reason's light...

Alfred Lord Tennyson – ‘The Kraken’ (1830) #AScareADay

This makes me feel bad for the Kraken. It seems to be a scary story for little Krakens.
joedunlavy.bsky.social
You make a good point. It might seem like more just because it is different. This story relies on setting a tone, which still seems to me that authors, in general, were better at doing even 100 years ago.

oct 4 - The Buried Alive by John Galt (1821)

I love the descriptive nature of earlier writing. I get the sense that our vocabulary has generally decreased through the years. Maybe it's just my own is so poor.

It gave this simple story a truly horrific edge!

I guess if someone is called an old Hag that they might just go ride with the devil. How we are treated would partially define how we behave towards the world, for better or worse.

Have a look at Kobo's offerings first. Zero ads, lots of books, a subscription service, and they treat their indie publishers well.

I'm quite pleased with Kobo. They do not insist on exclusive publishing and their platform is pretty easy to use. Books available in many countries, and the ereaders are quite nice.

I think "Sir" is only for a knighthood, but I can't play any musical instruments.

'Joe' is fine. I am really only looking forward to making dinner reservations under the name "Lord Dunlavy". 🧐
