CNN just featured our research, but they got the methods and results wrong! Needless to say, the newsletter is back (and it won't be written by AI).

3/3 This remaining difference was accounted for by the ~10% higher hemoglobin levels in males, which allows their blood to carry more oxygen to the working muscles.

2/3 Males have more muscle mass on average, but this didn't explain the whole picture. After researchers adjusted for differences in muscle mass, females' VO2max was still about 15% lower.

New research on highly trained athletes highlights that sex differences in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) are primarily driven by 2 factors: body composition and hemoglobin.🧵

What's a smart scale? Should you use one? What do you need to know about your body composition besides your weight? APS member Austin Robinson (@ausrob-phd.bsky.social) weighed in 😜 on the subject. Read more from @NBCNews: ow.ly/sKMo50WQuEz #ISpyPhysiology 🧪

🧂Our controlled feeding pilot trial suggests potential sex differences in kidney responses to dietary salt. With a high salt diet, females may increase endothelin-1 excretion more. Endothelin-1 is a potent vasoconstrictor peptide and promotes salt excretion by the kidneys.

🔥 How does your heart handle the heat as you age?

New research co-authored by Dr. Joseph Watso reveals that older adults adapt differently to extreme heat, relying more on heart function to stay cool, but facing greater risks to blood pressure and heart health.

Key outcomes:

Central blood pressure increased across age in ultramarathon runners, but their brachial (upper arm) blood pressure didn't follow the same trend.

An impressive 86% of ultramarathon athletes had arterial stiffness (cfPWV) values better than what's typically predicted for their age.

New research alert!

🌡️ Young and older adults maintained cardiac output in extreme heat. However, older adults relied more on systolic (i.e. pumping) function, yet still struggled to maintain systolic blood pressure.
