Eric Rudolph wrote this of his targets: “It was irrelevant to me which particular issue – taxes, abortion, gun rights – ended up being the spark that ignited this revolution. This was a war between two entirely different world views.”
Those who want to divide us want chaos. Don’t let them win.

Check out this podcast by @johnarchibald.bsky.social and @kbeccaandrews.bsky.social.

It's an incredible yarn that captures the violence, loss and inhumanity of Eric Rudolph's 1990s terror campaign, and shows how it echoes forward to our current national crisis. Can't recommend it enough!

Am I nuts to get bent out of shape about kids getting Bibles in schools? At a time when the president autographs them for cash and tells supporters he needs their $15 to further his unlikely bid to get into Heaven?

Call me crazy.

“Life knocks everybody down. What counts is how you stand up afterwards,” she said. “You are nothing more than a schoolyard bully, and I am not afraid to stand up to you.

“I am living proof of your failure … I am still here."

“The joint in my middle finger had to be fused, and it is indeed an injury I have longed to show you,” she said.

And then she flipped him the bird with two hands.

Double barrel. People in the courtroom laughed, and the judge was none too pleased, but Emily Lyons did not give a shit.

"I have more guts in my broken little finger than you have in your body,” she said.

And then Emily Lyons did the only thing to do in that situation.

“You damaged my body, but you did not instill the fear in me you hoped for," she said. “But you did not get the silence you longed for. I found a voice inside me I didn't know existed, and you're the one who brought it out."

Emily wanted a reaction. She challenged Rudolph.

“Look at me, Eric,” she said. “Do I look afraid?

Rudolph had agreed to plead guilty to save his own life. She goaded him, defiant.

“It's easy to be brave when holding the good end of a shotgun; or in this case, the remote control of a bomb," Lyons said to him. "When it was your turn to face death, you weren't so brave anymore."

“We tend to think of a terrorist as someone in a foreign country who dresses differently, looks different and speaks a different language,” Lyons said. “Thank you for drawing attention to the home-grown terrorists in our own backyard”

He was being sentenced in connection with the bomb that maimed her, that killed police officer Sande Sanderson. She spoke to Rudolph directly.

A thread.

In the summer of 2005, more than 7 years and 20 surgeries after Eric Rudolph pressed a button on his homemade detonator and forever changed her life, Emily Lyons faced her bomber in a Birmingham, Alabama courtroom.

It is, but also a bit infuriating hearing how some (many?) of his co-workers reacted to the fallout of him simply doing his job, and doing it well.

Most people hear "factory jobs" and think "1950s economic prosperity," which was only possible through strong unions.

The GOP says "factory jobs" and means "1880s corporate dominance over the working class."

Recognize the difference.

A friend summed up Tuberville's plan for Alabama better than I did:

“It's build factories, send kids to tech school to work at the factories, build prisons for those who don't want to work at the factories, and cut taxes for the factory owners.”

Make Alabama 1901 again!
