Just went to a Tortoise matinee. James Elkington subbing for Jeff Parker but still great. No photos but I’ll try and write something about this and Thursday’s SML show in the next day or two.

Finally got to see SML at the Church Of Sound in Clapton, and they were every bit as good as hoped. Crazy to think how many great records these five musicians have been a critical part of these past three or four years.

This is much better on the radio than the TV, not least because I like this England team more when I can't see the Barmy Army.

Plenty of reasons why The Stone Roses were so much better than the legions of British bands who wanted to be them. But a big one was having a bassist who could hold it together with so much natural funk and drive and absolute joy in his playing. RIP Mani.

It’s my turn to do another @mojomagazine.bsky.social How To Buy, and this time we’re going to have a go at 21st Century Neil Young albums – just the new ones, from Silver & Gold to Talkin To The Trees, not the archive stuff. Tell me your favourites – and why – and I’ll print the best comments.

Excellent Bob Dylan live review from @hutchie.bsky.social: "it is with regret that MOJO has to confirm not a single cha-cha-cha was performed when the opportunity arose..."

Bob Dylan Live In Glasgow Review: Rough, rowdy, and ever-changing
Lamplit and loose, Dylan returns to the scene of his '66 electric betrayal for yet another evolution. MOJO's David Hutcheon was there to bear witness.

Has MOJO bought the Daily Mail? (That would be good for many reasons)
Apologies for the Daily Mail link, but for those of us who are fans of The Incredible String Band, this is pretty wild.

As it's Neil Young's 80th, here's maybe my favourite clip of him in action. Not a solo thing, weirdly, but the CSNY torching of Down By The River at Celebration Big Sur. The face-off with Stills is for the ages. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNnM...

Bit tired of the "Terrible man who everyone knows is a terrible man turns out to be a terrible man after all; nothing happens" news cycle at this late date.

So much of the centrist approach to politics has devolved into "How do we trick people into supporting us like the right has done?" where talking sincerely about policies that might help ordinary people's lives is for naïve schmucks who don't understand the glorious theatre of it all

Waking up here in a better world than we went to sleep in.
We go to sleep in a better country than we woke up in. Thank you to everyone who worked for these coast-to-coast victories, for this utter repudiation of Trumpism, for economic justice and a country for all of us, not for white supremacy.

Really excellent writing by @hutchie.bsky.social about a fine and timely new Mavis Staples record. Gillian Welch still appeared stunned that Staples had covered her song when she played Hard Times in London last week.
“Staples’ work is incomplete as long as the world continues to promote leaders too dumb to understand the message - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐”

Mavis Staples continues to set the world to rights with one of the best albums of her 75-year career. Read MOJO’s 5/5 review and the tracklisting in full...
