Happy #StarWarsDay! My own favorite personal anecdote: I saw Star Wars with poet Allen Ginsberg when it first opened in Boulder in 1977. When the crawl went up the screen ("A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away..."), Allen sighed, "Thank God - I don't have to worry about it!"

one of my favorite act of street #protest is when the #nyc group called the up against the wall motherfuckers (or someone affiliated with them) removed the hands from this clock during a 1968 be-in organized by bob fass & #radio unnameable, an act which in turn triggered a cop riot […]

The The Music Never Stopped Deadcast is fucking *loaded* y'all. @bourgwick.bsky.social nails:

- Song development from proto-idea to fully formed
- Its roots in Mind Left Body jams & how MLB is still a core part of the tune
- The original lyrics by Hunter (👀) including the line "fuck me shoes" (👀👀👀)

i also wish perfida's mother was more of a character, with those roots teased out a tiny bit more, that all went by in 1-2 lines of dialogue. feel like a tiny bit more of that relationship could've added a lot to her character. makes me likewise wonder what they wrote/shot & left out.

ain't gonna learn what you don't wanna know, as a fella wrote.

on this week’s deadcast, @sg-marshall.bsky.social hit “the music never stopped,” tracing from jam to song, exploring how the music almost stopped & the band had to sell their record labels, & getting into high times magazine & the ‘70s pot biz with @seanhowe.bsky.social. www.dead.net/deadcast/blu...

was also sad that they did virtually nothing with the nuns.

yeah, in order to justify a lot of that (or make sense of it), i basically had to imagine all the parts of the frenesi/DL background (& related plots) that i didn't make it into the movie.
bourgwick.bsky.social
the specifics are very different but some (not all) of the big gestures/moves are similar.
bourgwick.bsky.social
there's not really a yes/no answer to that. but probably more no if you're worried.

now that i've seen "one battle..." & no longer fear spoilers, i should mention i was a guest recently on @johnsemley3000.bsky.social & co.'s slow learners podcast, poking at the counterculture threads in "vineland," which was seriously fun. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/v...

it also dislodged a memory of stumbling woozily/blinkily out of a similar late show of "there will be blood" at like 2 in the morning & realizing yoko & sean had been a few rows behind us.
bourgwick.bsky.social
the letter itself didn't bug me so much as that perfidia was definitely the main character/plot i wanted more from, feel like she thoroughly disappeared into the backstory in a way frenesi didn't in the book (which made that resolution feel a bit tagged on).

despite it having very little with "vineland" & despite having just reread "vineland," it made me wanna reread "vineland." is it too much to ask for pynchon to write the cheapo paperback re-novelization?!
bourgwick.bsky.social
caught the late showing of "one battle after another" last night & not sure i have much to contribute just yet, but it was awesome (as was the VistaVision) & my only wee quibbles were wanting more of some threads. please retoot or point me towards all your takes that i scrupulously scrolled-by.
