From the last show I worked on as an editor. So cool being part of a really great team! 😊#Emmy
I'm always bummed when I hear people blame this sort of thing. It's rarely the case.
Even more painful - I watch talented newcomers become disillusioned and bitter, blaming their lack of progress on industry politics, connections, or luck when the truth is simpler and harder: their work, while good, isn't yet great.

What are they doing? Playing the playbook. The random, unprovoked violence is the point. This isn't about immigration, it's about the #1 thing in the dictator handbook. Create an "enemy" and tell people you're the only one who can save them from this threat. Resist Peacefully. It will unwind them...

Man, this last season of Stranger Things was so great! The relationships were great, the characters did so much. I love that during the big finale, they took time out for Will's coming out. Hands down my favorite season since the first. Sad to see it go, but what an end!

After a year writing & rewriting my 1st script, I decided to turn my attention to a story that meant more to me. A Hughes-style high school movie about a punk rock kid & his best friends, their lives turn upside down when he falls for a transfer student who becomes a cheerleader. #Scriptsky
Hey #scriptsky
Tell us about the murky origins of your first proper script? (the first one you're kind of happy with)

Was it an article? An old story? A scene from another moving that sparked a 'what if?'

Inquiring minds and all that...

Hey #scriptsky — anyone know of a good blocklist for genAI accounts? Specifically "tools" that purport to help writers? I'd love to remove any posts from accounts like that on Scriptsky+

Great thread!
In a similar vein, I believe the

interview on #2WritersTalkingShit they talk about meetings. When a showrunner asks "What are you watching?" They're not looking for a list of TV shows... Listen, it's great! #Scriptsky open.spotify.com/episode/4BHT...

Anyone have good examples of a query letter that worked? #Scriptsky
Think your cover letter opening needs to highlight your work? Wrong. That prime real estate sentence exists to grab attention, not provide context. Hook first, journey later. Make me want to keep reading before you tell me how you got here.

A few years back, I looked up Support Staff on IMDB pro. They're really easy to find, a lot of them are probably on this platform and they're happy to go out for a free coffee and talk. Just reach out! #Scriptsky
Most early-career writers think they need to know showrunners to land Writers' Assistant jobs. Actually, you need to know people adjacent to showrunners - other assistants, coordinators, PAs in the system. That network is more accessible than you think.

My favorite review of this script was someone who called it a combination of "Pretty in Pink" and "Misery." Two of my favorite movies. That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me. 😭🥰 #Scriptsky

Hunting down managers to query is rough, but I did the math. Instead of spending 1 day grinding out 50-70, if I do 2 per day at the top of my day, I'll start out accomplishing something which will spring me into my day on a good note, AND I'll be done by the end of January. Who's with me? #Scriptsky
Cold emailing 50-70 managers sounds brutal, but here's the math: if your work is truly ready to sell, those reads can convert to meetings. Managers are in business to make money. They'll find room on their roster if they think they can sell what you're writing.

About to cross the street in Los Feliz and noticed Jorge Garcia was about to cross toward me. My brain said, "Hurley!" And I said, "No, his real name" And my dumb brain said, "Oh! Hugo Reyes." Nope, still not his real name...
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

Went to a cafe after a Barenaked Ladies concert and saw Joey Slotnick, I presume, on a date. He saw me recognize him and the look in his eyes said, "Please not now." I winked and kept going. I hope it was a good one!

A writer sends me their sample. The writing is clean, the structure works, the dialogue flows. It's professional. Polished, even.

I just got hired and fired from writing a feature all within 24 hours. I celebrated both. 🎉
Both of these things indicate you're doing the deal! Enjoy that!

Writers often think celebrating small progress will make them complacent. But it works the opposite way - acknowledging what you've accomplished reminds you that you've already made progress. That's not complacent, that's building confidence for your next project.
