(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

I’m starting on a super low dose and it’s very important if you’re on HRT to be monitored and tested every few months to make sure nothing is getting out of whack. I’ve heard horror stories of women being overprescribed and getting all fucked up which is just as bad as not being listened to.

Obviously don’t just do your own research and ask for testosterone but if you’re feeling like something is not right and you’re over 40 definitely talk to your doctor and demand a full panel, including testosterone, thyroid, iron etc (b/c I’m also anemic, another side effect of low T. Yay!)

And an untreated hormonal imbalance can be very dangerous especially when it starts to affect other things that can lead to heart issues. As usual, many women are not listened to. I’m actually super excited to start HRT because I can’t wait to finally start feeling better.

Women need testosterone just like men need estrogen. We just don’t need a ton of it, but it affects our mood, energy, muscles, hair, insulin, cholesterol, weight, libido etc. So all of this to say: women (and men!) please advocate for yourself. We don’t actually just have to live with perimenopause.

But since the research on testosterone in perimenopausal and menopausal women is still pretty new and limited, my insurance won’t cover it 🫠 They will cover it for men, and women transitioning to men, but not a 42 yr old woman who has the testosterone of a 65 year old woman.

My estrogen and my progesterone were fine but no one had bothered to test my testosterone which, it turns out, was totally depleted. I have the testosterone of a postmenopausal woman. And guess what? Low T messes with your insulin and your cholesterol! So guess who gets to start taking testosterone?

I asked around and I found a doctor who came highly recommended by other over 40 and 50 yr old women because I wasn’t settling for “that’s just the way it is”. I was so damn tired all the time, I had constant brain fog. I was tired of being tired.
