I don't know about the security guarantees in relation to the why, but Sweden signed the NPT in 68. Your timeline is correct as far as I know. I was careless in this and did not distinguish clearly enough that I wanted mainly to talk about the SAP in this post.

Most of the Soc Dem party, including Erlander, were thinking of national defence though, and Palme's position was in the minority, if not a one man cause.
Even he, though used Realpolitik to argue for nuclear weapons in a speech for the soc dem youth league in 1958.
