there are two kinds of Great Books lists:

(1) "you need to read 28 books by Aristotle including 'On the Gait of Animals' and maybe 7 books published after 1700"

(2) "start with the classics: the Divine Comedy, Harry Potter, The Da Vinci Code"

Folks, if your library doesn’t have a book you want to read, ask them to buy a copy. Most have a convenient form and will let you know when it comes in. If your library offers ILL, they can even borrow books from other libraries.

even when AI is surveying reputable sources, we shouldn't forget that summarizing and synthesizing are interpretive activities that involve selecting what is most significant or salient to ongoing discussions. even if AI were unbiased, this is creative work that we should be doing.

I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.

X rolled out a new feature overnight showing where accounts are based. This network of “Trump-supporting independent women” that claimed to be “real Americans” are based in Thailand.

The photos were stolen from European models & posts pushed pro-Trump lines while targeting Islam and LGBTQ people.

at the height of globalization it was important to emphasize localism or particularism but now that we’re entering an era of fragmentation characterized by spheres of influence maybe it’s time again for universalisms

popes managing what indulgences you get for pilgrimages to shrines sounds like a game designer doing updates. they nerfed the arm of St. John the Baptist because a thousand years off your time in purgatory was too OP.

if I had a gazillion dollars, I would create an experience library for writers. do you want to know what something smells like? do you want to know what it was like to use this artifact? do you want to walk around a period-accurate house? we've got it along with specialists to explain.

Augustine claimed that the bodies of the resurrected would all be aged or rejuvenated to age 33, which seems like a great deal if you’re older but not so much if you’re only 18 or 20.

can you point to a single major elected politician who simply refuses to enter a room with Trump and, if not, then why are you berating Zohran for taking a meeting with him? why is he held to this standard?
