Terry and the Pirates by Milton Caniff from October 12, 1941. The last Sunday strip before the death of Raven Sherman, which was a widely reported event in popular culture at the time.
Terry and Dude Hennick are worried about Raven, who is resting in a tent due to her injuries. She is in a bad shape so they create a gurney and attempt to travel but do not make it far before running out of water. They try to give Raven hope but she has accepted that she is dying. She asks them to stop so she can watch the sun come up one more time.

In “Peanuts,” Snoopy first appeared as the WWI flying ace 60 years ago, on October 10, 1965. (I’d wager that, thanks to Peanuts, the Sopwith Camel is the only WWI airplane most people can name.) Here’s the debut of the flying ace and his biplane, before the many battles with the Red Baron.

The Spirit from October 9, 1949. Art by Will Eisner & Jerry Grandenetti, with letters by Abe Kanegson.
The top of the page is an image of the Spirit. Under his is his logo sitting in a hill that is part of the graveyard he lives in. At the bottom of the page is the skyline of the city. On the hill, it reads “To the north of Central City, on a hill overlooking the bustling metropolis, lies abandoned Wildwood Cemetery. Here, hidden in the tangled weedy growth, is the hideaway of the Spirit. Accepted by police as a friendly ‘outlaw’ and feared by the underworld, his true identity is still a mystery. Who is really the man behind the mask? Every so often, someone tries to find out…”

The latest Copernicus data from October 3rd put the planet at a daily surface temperature anomaly of 1.51°C over the 1850-1900 IPCC pre-industrial baseline.

And it looks like the anomaly will be heading back over 1.60°C in the next few days. Stay tuned!

How fast is the planet warming right now?

By looking at daily decadal differences in temperature we get a rate of about 0.35°C per decade. However, the rate of warming itself is increasing and is forecast to reach 0.40°C per decade by the early 2030's.
