This was written by that well-known radical *checks notes* Pope St. John Paul II.
42. Returning now to the initial question: can it perhaps be said that, after the failure of Communism, capitalism is the victorious social system, and that capitalism should be the goal of the countries now making efforts to rebuild their economy and society? Is this the model which ought to be proposed to the countries of the Third World which are searching for the path to true economic and civil progress?

The answer is obviously complex. If by "capitalism" is meant an economic system which recognizes the fundamental and positive role of business, the market, private property and the resulting responsibility for the means of production, as well as free human creativity in the economic sector, then the answer is certainly in the affirmative, even though it would perhaps be more appropriate to speak of a "business economy", "market economy" or simply "free economy". But if by "capitalism" is meant a system in which freedom in the economic sector is not circumscribed within a strong juridical framework which places it at the service of human freedom in its totality, and which sees it as a particular aspect of that freedom, the core of which is ethical and religious, then the reply is certainly negative.

I think Catholicism stymies people sometimes because a traditionally conservative Catholic position doesn't neatly line up with current conservative orthodoxy in the United States.

I met Matt at IRE a couple years ago and found him to be a great reporter and a generous colleague. Real bad move by Business Insider.

Business Insider wrote up a story on how some of their past investigative work led to a new California law. The story is strangely unbylined.

The reason perhaps? The publication recently laid off the reporter behind that investigation, Matt Drange.

The second looks at recent efforts to reform Connecticut's system for appointing and overseeing justices of the peace — officials who are authorized to perform marriages, among other responsibilities.

"Oversight ... is limited," one official said. www.ctinsider.com/news/article...
No one oversees Connecticut's justices of the peace. Critics say that has to change.
Concerns about lax oversight have prompted calls from some lawmakers to reform the justice of the peace program in recent years. So far, legislation has yet to make it to the governor’s desk.

The first looks at the long, arduous, invasive process couples often go through when one is a citizen and the other is not.

It also looks at the devastating consequences that can come from sham marriages.

“The system is really, really tough,” one expert said. www.ctinsider.com/news/article...
For immigrants, sham marriages are a ‘cardinal sin’ with devastating consequences
Entering a sham marriage can result in criminal charges and a permanent ban from receiving immigration benefits like a visa, legal permanent residency or U.S. citizenship.

I don’t usually cover breaking news, but this story is truly wild.

A pastor in central PA brought an AR-15 to church and pointed it at people during his sermon. Gun safety experts and internet commentators are, predictably, not happy!
