The most influential forces in our culture have mastered the technique of defining rivalries and then pitting sides against each other. Moving from where we are requires finding a common goal and working toward it, with others who want the same thing, even if we disagree about lots of other things.

When I think about Dr. King as a civil rights leader, I can't help but focus on the leadership part of his example. Leadership is about directing energy. His speech, while grounded in hard truths about racism, directed that energy in a positive direction.

When I think about Dr. King as a civil rights leader, I can't help but focus on the leadership part of his example. Leadership is about directing energy. His speech, while grounded in hard truths about racism, directed that energy in a positive direction.
