Anywho, as I tell the young people in my life whom I love deeply, this is your time to create beautiful works of art, to throw the most fun parties you can for no money, and to fight like hell for a future worthy of you. This is NOT a time to retreat into yourself and to forgo the world.

I'm not against the No Kings protest - you should go. But also be careful not to compare this to what we're watching in LA. There's a difference between a permitted, coordinated march that advocates a return to a sense of status quo & a grassroots movement that calls for its abolition. 1/

One problem is that those who oversee endowments tend to live in a world in which there is no higher value than long-term financial stability. Which I get. But universities are now going to have to decide between two existential threats: A shrinking nest egg, or a surrender of their core missions.

This week 17 CUNY students showed up the SEVIS lists. Some have been offered pro bono counsel by their institution, while others were offered a list of paid counsel or nothing at all. I spent the afternoon talking to a terrified student on an F-1. Like what do we do? 1/

A new McCarthy era is upon us. Stupid, depressing, and dangerous as ever. I wonder whose name will carry the dunce cap in the history books. Too many are complicit. I’ll need to find upset and action, but for now I’m feeling grief at the dehumanization inherent to all this.

NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

We also asked a dozen of Morgan Jenness's close friends and associates—members of her chosen family—to recall the gifts of attention, clarity, fire, and joy Morgan gave to them, the theatre field, and the larger world. www.americantheatre.org/2024/12/06/t... 2/2

Damion Searls, who has translated the Nobel laureate Jon Fosse, gives neither an apology nor a theory nor a history but, rather, a “philosophy” of translation. More precisely, he offers a “phenomenology” of translation, Max Norman writes.
What Does a Translator Do?
Damion Searls, who has translated a Nobel laureate, believes his craft isn’t about transforming or reflecting a text. It’s about conjuring one’s experience of it.

Going to try my best to post and contribute to conversations about expanded dramaturgies, Dutch/Flemish and American theatre & performance, lefty theory, and of course the occasional cat picture.
