A few years ago, I learnt it was made in the 1970s-1980s by a patient in a ‘mental hospital’ (I won’t say who).

A material reminder, today, of the many obvious but also mundane ways that mental ill health, psychiatry, their effects and legacies, endure, shift and shape us.

This is a woven basket tray which, for as long as I can remember, has lived under the sink at my parents house.

It’s been well-loved and used, often to serve hot soup to poorly children off from school, in bed, or cups of tea to visitors.
A hand holds a woven basket tray. In the centre are images of two apples, surrounded by various written apple recipes. It’s been in my house for as long as I can remember.

Can anyone recommend some histories of old age and the body, specifically those that look at leakiness and focus on the eighteenth-nineteenth centuries? Aware of stuff on the menopause but want to check I'm not missing something!

i've seen so many articles on this today, and not a single one so far has pointed out that where "not taking any benefits payments" is concerned, you have no access to public funds on a visa. this has been the case for years. but nobody, from the BBC down, will challenge this or anything else

To say that you will ‘have to volunteer’ to be eligible for settled status even if working full time as a doctor or nurse for example is not really volunteering because it would not be voluntary. The govt should call it something else if they want to enforce it.

The summer has seen anti-trans campaigns across the UK and US, alongside a crisis in healthcare. But what use could trans history have in these time, beyond proving 'we have always been here'?

Autism is back on the front pages. Why not read the book that my excellent @manchester.ac.uk @manchstm.bsky.social colleague Dr Bonnie Evans has published on the history of autism? It's open access and you can read it online for free.

‘UK respondents dramatically overestimate how many immigrants there are and how many of them are Muslim. They overestimate what proportion of immigrants are from north Africa by a factor of 10, and from the Middle East by a factor of two, and underestimate how many are from North America.’

I saw a load on the drive into Sheffield yesterday, hanging from lampposts along the side of the road. Someone has obviously been going up with a ladder and hanging them there. Very scary
