This is happening on Monday 8 December, 2.30 pm, online! It's going to be a fantastic seminar with Dr Ayra Thampuran, Dr Chimwemwe Phiri and @duncanwilson78.bsky.social, who will share short provocations on the topic of consent, followed by plenty of time for questions and discussion #photohist
Sharing again the next online seminar, this time linking our website! empnetwork.our.dmu.ac.uk/2025/11/07/o... While consent always feature in conversations on ethics, how it can be applied or rethought in historical contexts leads to more questions than answers, as we'll see!

Does anyone actually think this is good for anyone? Does anyone serious believe that because one university scored 0.000045 more than the next in a league table that the teaching is better there? Just put the cap back on as a bare minimum!

Hero
I heard a story about a female academic giving a paper at the IHR who, after receiving a long and aggressive question from a senior male professor, simply leaned back with her hands behind her head and replied “Oh, do fuck off.”
One of my colleagues went to a seminar at Berkeley and when someone asked a question Derrida brushed it off saying ‘what you ask may be important but it is not interesting’.

And still nobody cares
Chief exec of OfS 'said the OfS believes there are 24 institutions at risk of exiting the market in the next 12 months, seven of which are large providers with more than 3,000 students. There are another 25 or so institutions of various sizes at risk over a two- to three-year period, she added.'

Skills minister says no higher education institutions are at imminent risk of collapse this year but OfS confirms more than 20 providers are being closely monitored

'The committee had heard about one institution that had been approached by another regarding a potential merger. The institution approached had been “doing their due diligence” by gathering information, but after examining the financial situation concluded that the other provider “can’t go on”.' 2/3

I stopped here, I can't face listening to much more of this, it's morally, strategically, and just politically appalling how little care, thought, and effort has gone into higher education. They thoroughly do not care.
Asked about funding balance, Smith demonstrates how irrevocably we all live in George Osborne's world.

She just says its not their problem. "We might take a view."

I'm stopping now, this is simply the British state shrugging its shoulders about a profound aspect of our society. That's all it is.

Yes, this. In this kind of environment, it doesn't seem to matter that there's no longer a universities minister
What’s so infuriating is that everything they do is completely random and often contradicts other things they are doing, or policy objectives they claim to want. There is no strategy, coherence or even entry level competence.

But where else to go for the rest of us? Everybody I speak to from every sort of industry says their sector is in complete meltdown
I’m 60, and a professor. HE will probably survive just about long enough to take me to retirement, but not much longer. A kind of ‘merrie old England’ version of Oxbridge will survive, but the rest will be unrecognisable in a decade or so.
