Academic working on Gender & Language in Greek tragedy, and gender in historical video games. Also a lot of women's cricket chat. Views all mine.
The Word Grammar tool is really bad at handling hyphenated compound adjectives, isn't it.

Accidentally put Nicole Loraux's Invention of Athens on the same week of the course reading list three times. Is it time for a break yet?

(Although it wouldn't be the worst thing if we read it three times in a week...)

I have an awful lot of work to do at the moment. But it's February, the employment situation is getting emotionally pressing, and that is not very motivating.

As promised recently, I'm delighted to now be launching a new monthly newsletter service which will become the home of monthly content from me regarding my work as a historian of both Star Wars and the First World War. But what does that mean?

I feel so defeated. I graduated from Cologne Game Lab this week and I've been looking for a job opportunity for around 3 months. I haven't seen a SINGLE 3D Environment Art position.

If you know ANYONE in Germany that looks for a 3D Artist please help me.

2025 was a wildly fascinating ride into gendered histories throughout the past!! Here's a selection of some of the #WCCWiki #Wikipedia pages from across the year that we created or edited, including the achievements and challenges we faced as a community ...

When I started in academia I could manage extra work all evening and every weekend - the job I was doing meant that that was all going on teaching prep rather than anywhere useful, but still. I would value having that capacity back now - I really find myself so much more tired these days.

How? How do you double-check the accuracy, if you're not already an expert? Ask a different GenAI? Or do you, you know... Have to go and do the research you would have done anyway, pre-AI? Because I'm buggered if I can think of how you do that in a way where the GenAI saved you time.

Do I know artists who work in an 18th century style of illustration who might take on a modest proposal (so to speak)?

Wondering if it's too on-the-nose for my next author biography to say "over the course of this project has worked at..." and then just list multiple places. I've already started putting "at the time of writing is" because often the bio doesn't match my institution by the time the work is published!

Also means stories end up framed like this.

Zimbabwe's campaign wasn't good, but wasn't 'disastrous'.

Rather than applying men's labels & preconceptions, it should be noted ZIM are a developing nation, have never been a top women's team, and were expected to lose to at least 3 of these games.

The entire model of Full Member and Associate status was already a ridiculous anachronism, and is exposed as a total farce by forcing women's cricket to fit into that men's framework.

Should underline this isn't about being anti-Zimbabwe. They are doing genuinely interesting things in women's cricket, such as playing multi-day domestic games, and should be supported.

It's about the unfairness of granting access to funding & qualification routes based on inherited men's status.

What happened with #WCCWiki in 2025? How are women and non-binary classicists looking on #Wikipedia?

Here's a thread to wrap-up last year, and to forge a path for 2026 ...

In 2016 7% of biographies on #Wikipedia about classicists were about women. Now @richardnevell.bsky.social's wonderful analysis shows that 10 years later, that number is now almost 20%. That's a huge achievement! #WCCWiki

I have been playing a very bad game which seems to have as its premise that you should play terrible mini games and if you do well it'll show you some pictures of half naked Aphrodite. But... I can see Aphrodite half naked any time!!
