I’m a bit late but it’s still January, so new year new profile picture!

I have a habit of updating across platforms to help keep in touch with people. This year is different.

As Silicon Valley loses its mind it felt more like an “in memoriam” than anything else.

It’s not just TikTok that’s dying.
“The old order is not coming back. We should not mourn it. Nostalgia is not a strategy.

But from the fracture, we can build something better, stronger, and more just.”

Is 2026 the year media starts catching up with the Covid science?

Dementia risk has long been associated with Covid19 infections.

We’re facing a mass disabling event that could be mitigated by proper public health measures.

We can’t afford to keep ignoring the elephant in the room.

Persistent brain fog, headaches and changes in smell or taste following Covid infection could signal an increased risk of Alzheimer'sdisease later in life, scientists have warned.

How to help save globally overwhelmed healthcare systems: upgrade the PPE.

“Surgical face masks provide inadequate protection against flu-like illnesses including Covid, and should be replaced by respirator-level masks – worn every time doctors and nurses are face to face with a patient.”

2025 was the dumpster fire I expected.

If you’re looking for more control over 2026 may I recommend investing in high quality masks to wear in crowded spaces.

The dumpster fire may keep burning in 2026, but it’s a whole lot easier to handle healthy.

The UK is within spitting distance of having more murders portrayed annually on TV shows and movies set in the country than occur in real life
It's so incredible how low homicide rates are in Europe. The UK, with a population of 70 million people, had fewer than 600 murders in 2023.

3D depiction of rainfall distribution across Great Britain.

England is a very dry place: London gets as much rain as Jerusalem.

With climate change, the south will need to prepare for even more acute water shortages.

Canada could do something really smart on Monday by launching round two of their application for H1-B visa holders and their families.

The H1-B visa application fee increasing from $1000 to $100,000 a year could be a win for Canada

- Start ups could move to afford talent
- Companies could expand satellite offices to keep talent
- More medical professionals to meet backlogs

Now US research institutes really need satellite campuses

We're halfway between the IPCC 6th and 7th Assessment Reports, and an international team of 61 scientists updated some of the key metrics used in the reports. As I wrote for @climateconnections.bsky.social, the findings were pretty bleak, but there are some glimmers of hope 🧵 (1/6)

When you play stupid games
For the coming year, China has booked ZERO shipments of US soybeans. (Per Bloomberg and Farm Policy News, links below.)

Who could have predicted that bad tariff policy would wreck the US soybean market?

Especially when this same admin blew up commodity markets with tariffs in 2018? A mystery!
