Sent off both my national and local UCU ballots today! Historical moment for our local ballot as we’re the first union branch to potentially organise industrial action over the repression of Palestine solidarity as a workplace issue.

We've written to KCL Management urging them to urgently lobby UK Government to enable safe passage for Chevening Scholarship students from Gaza to the UK. Considering the level of institutional complicity that KCL has with the genocide, it's really the LEAST they can do. See our statement below.👇

This may not be about you, but it is happening to the people around you. Are you comfortable with that? Please vote in the KCL UCU e-ballot on academic freedom and safeguarding
Politically-motivated intimidation - designed to silence us - has overwhelmingly targeted women and non-binary people, BAME and junior colleagues + branch union activists. This is a racist and misogynistic campaign threatening the personal and job security of often precariously employed colleagues

Great analysis from @parkesland.bsky.social on the connection between attacks on Palestine solidarity and attacks on trans rights. Relevant to our wider mobilising as a union and our current dispute about academic freedom and safeguarding at KCL UCU
The Starmer regime decided, on the same day, to proscribe Palestine Action and to impose trans segregation on the Parliamentary estate.
These are not unrelated events.

We are in formal dispute with KCL because the institution has failed in its duty of care. Investigations into events have been delayed and onerous. In some cases, investigations have targeted our members causing severe distress, including those with direct family experience of the genocide in Gaza

Over the last year, your colleagues, comrades and friends at KCL have been harassed for defending Palestinian rights, upholding academic freedom and union activism. THIS is why we are balloting members NOW. But what exactly has been happening?
