Today KCL was formally notified of a trade dispute between KCL and @ucu.org.uk over the College’s failure to safeguard the welfare, wellbeing and safety of staff, its mishandling of complaints procedures, and its failure to protect academic freedom

We've written to KCL Management urging them to urgently lobby UK Government to enable safe passage for Chevening Scholarship students from Gaza to the UK. Considering the level of institutional complicity that KCL has with the genocide, it's really the LEAST they can do. See our statement below.👇

An open letter to KCL management, condemning punitive misconduct disciplinaries against Palestine Encampment students, is currently circulating with 250+ signatories. We copy the text of the letter ⬇️

Not surprising to me that King’s College London is in this shameful league table @kclucu.bsky.social

This outcome gives us important leverage in negotiations with management. Please come to our next General Meeting on 23 July to discuss next steps!

We are demanding that management make a public statement condemning the harassment that has taken place; take adequate steps to safeguard staff affected; and commission an independent review into the handling of complaints related to Palestine since late 2023

🌟 91% of voting members shared our concern that management is not doing enough to protect academic freedom and safeguard staff
kclucu.bsky.social
🌟78% of voting members would support a formal ballot on possible industrial action if there is no agreement to end this trade dispute
kclucu.bsky.social
🌟55% of our voting-eligible membership participated. Thank you so much! This easily passes the anti-trade union legal 50% threshold for a valid result

Results are now in on our consultative e-ballot on academic freedom and staff safeguarding ➡️ we PASSED the threshold for a valid result with 🌟91% 🌟sharing our concern that management is not doing enough to protect us and our rights kcl.web.ucu.org.uk/2025/06/11/c...
Consultative ballot on academic freedom and staff safeguarding at KCL
VOTE to show management that you’ll take a stand for academic freedom and the safety of colleagues at KCL! What is this dispute about? What are the demands? In March, KCL UCU formally notified manage...

This may not be about you, but it is happening to the people around you. Are you comfortable with that? Please vote in the KCL UCU e-ballot on academic freedom and safeguarding

Politically-motivated intimidation - designed to silence us - has overwhelmingly targeted women and non-binary people, BAME and junior colleagues + branch union activists. This is a racist and misogynistic campaign threatening the personal and job security of often precariously employed colleagues

Great analysis from @parkesland.bsky.social on the connection between attacks on Palestine solidarity and attacks on trans rights. Relevant to our wider mobilising as a union and our current dispute about academic freedom and safeguarding at KCL UCU

The Starmer regime decided, on the same day, to proscribe Palestine Action and to impose trans segregation on the Parliamentary estate.

These are not unrelated events.

Trouble at King's College London ⤵️
Join a union. Stand together.

We are in formal dispute with KCL because the institution has failed in its duty of care. Investigations into events have been delayed and onerous. In some cases, investigations have targeted our members causing severe distress, including those with direct family experience of the genocide in Gaza
kclucu.bsky.social
Members should have received a unique link to their UCU-registered email from [email protected]. If you can’t find this, email us at [email protected]. Vote in solidarity: for freedom of academic expression and freedom for Palestine
kclucu.bsky.social
We NEED members to vote in our consultative e-ballot on academic freedom to give our negotiators the leverage they need and to show management the depth of concern among staff. This ballot does not commit the branch/members to any form of industrial action now, but we need your support
kclucu.bsky.social
We NEED KCL UCU members to come together NOW as a community in defiance of intimidation and institutional indifference
kclucu.bsky.social
Our negotiators are demanding that KCL take immediate steps to conclude investigations into harassers, protect staff, publicly condemn this harassment, and launch an independent review into the handling of politically-motivated complaints and systems like ‘Report and Support’

Our members have had their social media content investigated and policed by KCL, in flawed and onerous investigations that have included material posted up to almost a decade PRIOR to their employment by the university

Targeted harassment at KCL has often involved the mis-use of Report + Support to silence people. Since October 2023 the number of reports made through this anonymous system have more than doubled. Many cases have been baseless but the investigations have created enormous amounts of labour and stress
kclucu.bsky.social
At the same time, pro-Palestinian, BAME and Muslim students have been swiftly suspended and excluded, often without any clear justification. This is a racist double standard which needs addressing
