PREMISE
Liquor, gambling, police protection—there’s nothing in St. Paul that doesn’t go through the Gilliards.
Evan Cantor’s brewery and beer is no exception. Not that he minds much—tying his goods to the Gilliard distribution system has given him nine years of steady profits and kept thebusiness his grandfather founded from floundering in the noose of Prohibition. In the meantime, he’s free to enjoy all the illicit nightlife the city has to offer…including his occasional dalliances with the youngest Gilliard, Nathan.
Jensen Gilliard knows his place in the family business. The Gilliards might line their pockets with gold in 1925, but seventeen years ago he came to St. Paul as a veritable orphan, throwing himself on the mercies of his family as they teetered on the edge of poverty and despair. Adding one more mouth to feed was a burden Jensen has never forgotten, no matter much contraband profit piles up in their bank accounts.
When the head of the Gilliard family finds out about Evan and Nathan, he replaces Nathan with Jensen as business liaison, an order from on high neither of them can decline. Evan might be relentlessly independent, effortlessly charismatic, and flippantly queer, but Jensen is determined to seize this opportunity to prove his worth in the family business once and for all. And cold, aloof, taciturn Jensen might be a stick-in-the-mud, but if Evan wants to maintain his lifestyle and good reputation, working together is nonnegotiable.
Routine business visits reveal hidden depths, and soon their preconceived notions of each other are thrown into a tailspin. But a threat to the Gilliards’ supremacy in St. Paul also threatens the odd, undeniable connection between Evan and Jensen, and one question emerges to seal their fate: Is blood thicker than water?

The Gilliard waiting on the other side of the door was not the one Evan expected to see.
Nathan was a shit, but he was a familiar shit. Most of the time when he came to collect Evan’s books and corresponding tithe he accompanied his presence with a jibe about Evan’s overly long hair, and Evan could shoot back with a remark about what a shame it was to not use a cent of the copious Gilliard money to buy clothes that weren’t black, gray, or deep blue. Primed for a business conversation with the man who’d been a settled thorn in his side for years, Evan stood entirely unprepared to face the man actually facing him.
Lithe where Nathan was broad, golden-brown hair the precise shade of good whiskey Evan bought outside of Gilliard purview styled neatly even when he removed his straight-brimmed hat, Jensen Gilliard exhaled a line of smoke from his full-lipped mouth before removing his cigarette with his free hand. Despite the summer’s heat, present even before noon, neither his heather linen suit nor the fine amber-colored shirt he wore bore any signs of sweat or wear, as though he’d materialized out of thin air for the express purpose of causing Evan consternation. His eyes, strikingly green and direct, fixed on Evan without greeting, and when neither of them spoke Jensen arched one stately brow and blinked.
“Looking to catch flies?” he asked, indicating Evan with the smoke held between long, delicate fingers. “Or—imitating a fish?”

Not just through the physical ease on his face—the implicit trust, the fact he’s comfortable enough to be in such a state with Nathan.
Or perhaps he just needs to clear a smudge.
