When a publisher or agent says they're open to submissions, only to be closed again by the time you've got everything together.

The only reason these ghouls want to switch to an insurance based system is so that they can profit from your illness. Any other excuse is a lie.
There it is.

Farage and Reform would end our NHS.

Millions of people could not afford to be ill under a Reform government.

This book was amazing, kept me on my toes and did a great job blending the back story into the plot. This book shows the darker side of Vampires and other paranormal beings.

Yo-ho, me hearties & all that.

Doing the agent & publisher trawl, as I do from time to time, & with one notable exception all bar the 'always open/rolling sub' ones are closed. Some seem to have been closed for so long that I wonder if they'll ever open again.
I know it's tough out there - maybe tougher than ever - but...sheesh.

So after a nice, enjoyable holiday period which included a break from news & socials (mostly, in the latter case), I decided to catch up on events & Jesus fucking Christ.

Supposed to be @chilternkills.bsky.social today. I found out a couple of weeks ago that I couldn't make it due to a 'life gets in the way' thing, but I'd have had to cancel anyway as I've come down with Covid!
(It's not too bad at the mo, I'm taking it easy, 🤞I can walk it off soon.)

After listening to Ep.6 of @emmanewman.bsky.social & @aptshadow.bsky.social's excellent Starship Alexandria podcast, I watched Battle Beyond The Stars for the 1st time since about 1985. It'll never become a favourite, but I'm happy to admit pre-teen me was a far harsher critic than it deserved.

I often think about this letter to the New Statesman.

It's from a 1960s Tory, and neatly summarises how British politics has shifted massively to the right, and taken Starmer's Labour party with it.

Hey folks, I'm raising money for Venture Scotland, a charity that changes young people's lives through outdoor learning. I'm doing 300,000 steps in September, my small contribution to their attempt to walk the whole Scottish coastline. You can donate here, thanks:

Just saw a post saying Threads is "The best movie you won't watch twice."
I've seen it 3 times: in 1984, in 2003, and when it was rebroadcast last year.
Does that make me weird? 🤔
(FWIW I think it's important to remind yourself of what could happen, then do what you can to make sure it doesn't.)

This time 2 years ago I was sitting in a hotel room absolutely bricking it ahead of Creative Thursday at #TheakstonsCrime.
I shouldn't have worried. It was a great day & an even better weekend @harrogatefestivals.bsky.social.
If you're there this year, enjoy! If you're taking part in CT, good luck!

"Can you briefly explain the gap on your CV/resume?"
"Yes. I've been trying to avoid bullshit like this."
You know, one reason why I'm unlikely to give up this whole writing thing and return to the workforce is that in interviews I would have to explain the 27-year gap on my resume
