I write and talk about the NBA, especially the salary cap, CBA and roster construction stuff. I do these things for Spotrac, NBA Front Office Show and The Basketball Bulletin. Any nonsense you see here is from me, not my employers.
Quick notes on the Cavs-Kings-Bulls trade:

🏀Cavs save about $6.9M in salary in this deal. That will be nearly $40M in tax savings too. Still a second-apron team.
🏀Cavs will have the ability to extend Keon Ellis, but limited 3/~$52M due to extension rules after a trade

I know the Heat have injuries too, but that’s an awful loss. The Bulls were down a lot of rotation guys tonight. Miami seems kind of stuck right now.

Darryn Peterson is awesome is turning into Darryn Peterson is awesome…when he plays.

My incredibly dumb NBA All-Star idea in honor of the Royal Rumble:

The 24 All-Stars draw numbers like in Royal Rumble. Two guys start out playing 1-on-1. A new player joins every two minutes. Whenever someone scores, the player who has been on the floor longest is eliminated.

Interesting that the Spurs moved Harrison Barnes to the bench for the first time this season in this afternoon game against the Hornets. Julian Champagnie and Devin Vassell both started, with Barnes available as a reserve.

NBA teams receive a luxury tax credit when players are hit with a league-mandated suspension. The Sixers will be just under $1.3 million over the luxury tax line after the Paul George suspension. That's down from being more than $7 million over the tax line pre-suspension.

ICYMI: Spurs-Hornets for today was moved up to a 12:00 noon ET start due to impending severe weather.

Really good win for Orlando. Two in a row over East teams in front of them in the standings. Coming off a string of not-close losses, these were two necessary wins for the Magic.
January 31, 2026 at 3:17 AM
The Magic picked up their on-ball defensive intensity and flipped this game. Toronto was cruising and now Orlando has the lead. Jalen Suggs' fingerprints are all over this turnaround. He's such a huge difference maker for Orlando.
January 31, 2026 at 2:58 AM
The Kings are awful, but that's still a good win for the Celtics, considering Jaylen Brown was out. Six guys in double-figures in points. Good defense across the board. Solid team effort, led by a big night from Payton Pritchard.

Empty the bench, Joe. More than you already have.

When Toronto is making outside shots, they're really, really tough. Team is super unselfish (almost to a fault sometimes) about moving the ball for good shots.
January 31, 2026 at 2:12 AM
Baylor Scheierman is up to 16 points. His career-high of 20 is well within range.
January 31, 2026 at 2:08 AM
Scottie Barnes just made a GREAT full-court outlet pass to get the Raptors a buzzer-beating layup. Secured the rebound and bombed it to the other end of the floor in one motion. Kevin Love and Wes Unseld would be proud!
January 31, 2026 at 1:50 AM
Payton Pritchard is destroying the Kings, almost all by himself.

22 points
9-for-11 FGs
4-for-5 3Ps
8 assists

Pritchard was responsible for creating 42 points in the first half.

I don't want to be mean, and this is far from breaking news, but the Kings stink. This team can't be broken up fast enough. Hopefully we're in the waning days of this group together.
January 31, 2026 at 1:36 AM
Collin Murray-Boyles can't be passing out of open layups under the rim like that. Don't love that he never even looked to shoot the ball when he got it.
January 31, 2026 at 1:35 AM
The contract is a lot, but Zach LaVine can still help a team that needs scoring. He's just as good as he's always been in that area.
January 31, 2026 at 1:31 AM
Dominant offensive first quarter for Boston:

40 points
17-for-24 FGs
5-for-10 3Ps
12 assists

Kings shot just 6-for-20 from the field, but went 10-for-12 on free throws.

The Detroit Pistons have only one more loss than the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Not sure how many people had that one predicted this far into the season.
