This is what needs to change. We need the media to do its job and tell us what's actually happening. If the Liz Cheney criminal referral is nonsense, they need to say so. To act like it's a valid referral is *not* "just the facts. It's complicity with lies.
Chris Murphy: "I read the headlines about the Liz Cheney criminal referral and almost every single one of them in mainstream media played this straight as if it was a normal function of legislative power, instead of telling the truth, which is that this is made up out of thin air."

This is so brutal. And "legitimately assaulted" and "we'll decide whether or not it's credible" are Graham's own words. Disgusting.
Senator Lindsey Graham said on Sunday that he’s ready to hear from people who have a sexual-assault allegation to make against “anybody nominated for a high-level job in Washington.” How, Megan Garber writes, could anyone resist such an invitation?

How could any woman resist Senator Lindsey Graham’s generous summons to speak publicly about her claim?

Corporate taxes feel good because you're sticking it to the capitalists.

Except you're not. The economics is clear. Corporate taxes do hit shareholders, but also pass through to suppliers, customers and employees, essentially a flat tax.

Progressive income and consumption taxes are much better.
Here’s another thing to keep in mind: corporate taxes as a % of overall 🇺🇸 tax revenue have plummeted since after the depression.

And Trump wants to slash them even further.

I love this.

Don't succumb to the authoritarian, don't succumb to nihilism, and don't fight just for the sake of fighting.

Life is worth living. Live it. Be your authentic self. If the authoritarians come after you, so be it.

Oh my.

I like ChatGPT's take:

"From the context, it seems difficult to determine whether Trump's remark was meant to belittle Canada or if it stemmed from genuine confusion. ... Ultimately, whether intentional or not, such a statement undermines the seriousness of diplomatic communication."
“Governor of the Great State of Canada.” It’s small wonder that world leaders despise him and have trouble taking anything he says seriously.

Does anyone know of an organization that identifies and supports high integrity candidates in Republican primaries?

I feel that could be a cost-effective way to resist our slide into authoritarian populism.
Mitt Romney, in his quiet way, has always been radical- a role model for public service who defied partisanship. My latest:

It was a mistake to grant presidents emergency powers, because of abuse by unscrupulous presidents trumping up fake "emergencies" or "invasions". We should repeal/revoke them. In true emergencies, the president can do what is needed, and ask questions about legal authority later.
Trump dismisses a law that prevents him from using the military for deportations or other domestic tasks: "It doesn't stop the military if it's an invasion of our country, and I consider it an invasion of our country."

If you want people to obtain more health care services you can’t just mess around with financing, you need to address the barriers to supply.

Yes, this. A favorite NIMBY trick is to insist that all new housing be "affordable". This is dumb. It's like insisting that we make new cars that are cheaper than new cars. Remember: every new market-rate unit you build frees up an affordable unit that already exists!
I was once (a couple years ago) a skeptic of rental housing "filtering" -- the theory that new "luxury" apartments pull up higher-income renters from moderate-priced rentals, thereby benefitting moderate-income renters, and on down the line.

I am no longer a skeptic.

"From this action, and the glee that it has elicited, one learns not that the health-care system is broken, but that many of us are."

Exactly.

Whatever you think of health care in the US, you need to recognize that murdering the CEO of UnitedHealthcare is horrible. Full stop.
Before the capture of Luigi Mangione, many people seemed ready to turn him into a folk hero. Then a manifesto he was reportedly found with “made clear that Mangione’s politics are as commonplace as they are deplorable,” Graeme Wood writes.

Per ChatGPT:

"Yes, President-elect Donald Trump's claim ... is indeed perplexing. The U.S. presidential election system already relies on the Electoral College to determine the winner, not a direct popular vote. This structure has been in place since the nation's founding."

Perplexing indeed!

This is bad. Violence is never the answer. As an ethical matter, two wrongs do not make a right. As a practical matter, businesses will find the optimal approach no matter how many businesspeople you murder. You need to change the system, and murder does not help accomplish that.
