Here's my attempt to start building up our social gerontology community. I *know* that I am missing folks, so please comment, and I'll add you.

This is pretty crazy, study models millions of indirect hurricane deaths potentially driving/contributing to the life expectancy disparity in the US:

www.nature.com/articles/s41...
a, Total incidence of TCs on CONUS by month. Bar height is sum of average maximum wind speeds for all state-by-storm events. Colours correspond to decades. b, Stacked overlapping excess mortality responses to each storm for all of CONUS. Each storm response aggregates state-level responses nationally, accounting for state-level population and adaptation. Outline colours correspond to the decade when the TC occurred. The upper envelope is the total estimated mortality burden for CONUS resulting from all TCs occurring during the prior 172 months (see Supplementary Fig. 3). c, Official deaths directly resulting from TCs for each month according to NOAA National Hurricane Center and NOAA National Weather Service6,7. The y-axis scale is the same for b and c.

Socioeconomic Differences Among High Schools Drive Gap in College Outcomes

I'm fairly obsessed with this new publication from Fingerman, Birditt, Fiori et al. on "fringeships" and the importance of weak ties. The full spectrum of friendship has been under-theorized, especially in social gerontology, and I'm happy to see work.

Can anyone tell me why every university talk takes place Tues. afternoon? As someone who has taught during that slot for more than a decade, it feels like I'm doomed to miss all the good stuff. Or, is this just a case of confirmation bias?

Either way, event planners please sprinkle in a few Weds.

I really appreciated all of the presenters' insights and thoughts, but I really loved @jessicacalarco.com's comments about organizing around care work. Disability scholars and advocates have long pushed for a similar reframing.

The reality is that the only thing that can reduce homelessness, mental illness, and addiction is more housing, more investment in shelters, and building more mental health infrastructure. That’s it. You can’t address homelessness without houses and you can’t address illness without healthcare.

My husband is an ER provider, where this process would start. It's how many people access mental health care. ERs cannot handle the current mental health load, w/ patients waiting days to be admitted. This will overwhelm already struggling ERs & our limited inpatient mental health care facilities.

The White House, via yet another executive order, has announced a plan for the sweeping removal and subsequent detention of people experiencing homelessness.
