Aloha kākou, I'm an Associate Professor of Music, Chair of Humanities at UH Maui College, and run both Music Studies and the Institute of Hawaiian Music. I'm also a haku mele (composer of Hawaiian poetry), engineer, producer mostly guitarist but also play play a few other instruments.

I saw my one of my daughters' grade school teachers, Kahoʻokele Crabbe, from the Hawaiian immersion program in Keaukaha. I wasn't sure he would remember me; I haven't seen him in 25 years. He looked at me for a second, I saw recognition, and he said "Aloha mai, Keoni." He always called me that 🤣

I've wanted to write a book called "Just Enough Music Theory for Hawaiian Musicians" for years. I decided to make it app instead so people could use it as I developed it. It's not ready for sharing yet as it needs more meat. But it is getting there. And it will be bilingual at birth.

I posted a new Hawaiian keyboard on the Chrome Web Store. This is for Chrome OS and not the Chrome browser. I dislike the slash-vowel system for generating the macrons but this is the only way to get it work for now. We are working on getting a system level keyboard in the OS but don't know when.

V2 of my Hawaiian keyboard for Chrome OS has been posted to a Chrome Web Store and is awaiting approval. It sucks that we have to change the way we type in Hawaiian because of the way their extensions work now. Hoping to have a native Chrome OS keyboard built into the system soon. 🤞🏼

The honeymoon with Claude Code is over, but the relationship continues. As the complexity of my main project (not the games) increases, I'm finding CC challenged to fix breakage, and sometimes altering parts of the codebase that - from my angle - have nothing to do with what I asked it to do. 🤔

And of course the confirmation code they sent me when I closed my account went to spam. 🙄

For those trying to cancel their Disney+ account, every Disney help page it gives you gives you the wrong url. The correct one: my.disney.com If you just go to disneyplus.com it gives you the interface for watching movies, no way to access your account. At least that's what it did for to me.
MyDisney Account
MyDisney lets you seamlessly log in to services and experiences across The Walt Disney Family of Companies, such as Disney+, ESPN, Walt Disney World, and more.

I was feeling pretty good about myself until I looked at the keyboard. 😱

What did you all do today? 🤣

It's not an ideal solution, but it seems to be the only one that will work in Chromebook for both binary apps and in Google Suites. More testing to follow but this appears to be solid. No Chromebook Hawaiian keyboard that works like our MacOS and Windows ones until I can get through to Chome folks.

A lot of great people doing great work in amazing programs will end because they are discriminatory? Bullshit. He pōmaikaʻi ia mau papahana i ka paeʻāina. In the end, everyone across the archipelago benefits from them. The damaged caused by this will be inestimable.

Next on the wish list is using voice input converting it to text. If only I knew someone with voice recognition in te reo Māori and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. 🙄

New day, new features. The old, cluttered keyboard with separate keys for house with and without kahakō/tohutō gone, replaced with a system level press, hold, and drag your finger option. Much cleaner. Also locked the window so that it doesn't move when the player drags their finger.

Sometime last year, the name I suggested for UH's new, Brightspace LMS (Lamakū) was selected. There was a lot of consternation about the switch; people hated it (the system, not the name). I understood how the person who named the Titanic must have felt. Today, I really appreciate the new system.

Is the world ready for the mega, six letter version of this in te reo Māori, ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, and other Reo Moana (eventually)? It really doesn't matter if it's ready for it or not, it's coming 😎 you'll still be able to play the classic five letter version, too.

Fascinating in that I usually see ‘aihue made passive by adding ‘ia. I've seen and heard a few Hawaiian words use different passive endings (pūlamahia, pūlama ‘ia, for example), but I don't think I've seen three different passive suffixes with a Hawaiian verb, which s common in te reo Māori.
