Did you know that Hong Kong stunt performers got the idea to use cardboard boxes to break falls from... the French?! 😳 I did not.
Page 131 from Lauren Steimer's EXPERTS IN ACTION, explaining that Hong Kong stunties got the idea to use cardboard boxes to break falls from the French production UP TO HIS EARS.

😭😭
amazing.
remember when they would censor words like "joint"?!?! i don't even know how to explain that to kids today.

(oh i forgot to talk about the bass...also just sitting in the pocket, down in the mix, but pops up the octave coming out of the chorus. chunking along.)

need some graph paper to work out the rest but yeah . . . fucking great tune. great video. perfection. what a gift.

i'm not a hat guy but Tom rocks a hat here (sidebar on Don't Come Around No More and Last Dance). i wonder about the costume designer. he's not wearing a watch.

dude. just..... fucking, music man. so goood. definition of popular songwriting in the late 20th century, moving from vinyl to radio to tv.

another commercial break for Raven Snow 👀, this time with an appreciation for Tom's perfectly timed reintroduction from the other side of the camera

(it’s a music video who fucking knows what instruments are on the actual recording. the open E string riffs feels like it was written on piano? idk. i like listening to new music and guessing what the performer's first instrument was. sometimes it's like "yeah this is piano.")

harmonica’s a Fender model but the guitar is a Gibson. It’s a Firebird—i have one and it’s one of my favorite guitars. so fast up the neck (tom mostly do open chords but for the solo bits up that E octave). tom’s has an extra peg for the strap (the front bit is on the back of the guitar )

acting: this shit is obviously scripted as fuck and so worked out, but in bits and pieces. yet Tom has to be on the whole time and there’s some delightful moments where he looks off camera. getting direction? getting bored? eyelines man.

15 minute commercial break to just sit and contemplate the actress Raven Snow 👀

next obviously is the camera work, rotating but breaking at the solo. tom’s gotta be on a turntable too. It's 1994 so we gotta geolocate the references (there's a scene that gives RUSHMORE but that wasn't until 98)

gotta talk about the organ intro. remember we're first listening to this on CD, this is track two, we don't have MTV so we gotta go to our friends house to see the video. track two is the one that's supposed to go up but there's a lull in the sequencing. like... did the discman battery die????

we’d start (unexpectedly) with the kick and snare. oddly flat sounding considering the techniques used on the rest of the album. (cf. “It’s Good to Be King”). Steve Ferrone plays just a fucking MONSTROUSLY simple beat. all of it in the touch. so good. the beat comes on like WHAT???

my kitty cat is getting older and I can't tell if he's dying or if he's worried that I'm dying and the answer is obviously both but just to say: i love this guy and I think he loves me and that's about as far as you can get in this world

Thune: "If the Democrats had won the majority, they probably would've tried to nuke the filibuster. And then you'd have four new senators from Puerto Rico and DC, you'd have a packed Supreme Court, you'd have abortion on demand ... "
