I feel like I have a pretty sizeable vocabulary. But I don't know what "atavistic" means, and I have no intention of looking it up, fully confident that I can get through life without it.

But I think it was just grasping for reasons to justify them just not liking the song for other reasons.

And 2) is not saying grace suddenly appeared because he started believing. There's an adjective in the sentence, for crying out loud. It's saying the gift of grace appeared *precious* when he began believing. It's a prayer of gratitude for the precious gift of grace.

This is how I feel when people say Amazing Grace is heretical because of 1) "a wretch like me" and 2) "how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed."

Sorry, but 1) is not a statement of total depravity. It's a line from a reformed slaveship captain. He gets to call himself a wretch.
