The reason the Right are so invested in the myth that the arts have no value isn’t because the arts don’t generate wealth (they do); it’s that studying the arts teaches people to imagine better ways of judging the value of an idea than by counting how much money it makes…

I arrived home from work just as the only other person in the house was leaving. I am all alone. It is glorious.

"Cats are so aloof," they* say, as my cat yells at me to follow her into the kitchen so I can act as her emotional support while she eats.

2024 road crash data is out and I looked at child injuries in Sheffield.

56 children were seriously injured on Sheffield roads last year, higher than other recent years.

Chart with largely flat but rising line of serious injuries per year: since 2018, 50, 40, 44, 50, 46, 56

The OH and I are going by train (with bikes) from Sheffield to Bristol via Shrewsbury, then back to Sheffield. He collected the tickets today. There are 36. Ridiculous.
A photo of many, many train tickets laid out in rows on a red sofa.

I've had enough of listening. Time for action on low traffic.

My letter in the Oxford Times today
Your correspondent says 'we should listen' when it comes to Oxford's perennial transport issues.

I've been listening.

I've listened to people say that children's safety doesn't matter, because drivers can't be expected to slow down.

I've listened to people say that bus passengers don't matter, because drivers have more money.

I've listened to people say that traffic jams don't matter, because cities will always be congested.

I've listened to people say that collisions don't matter, because 'accidents will happen'.

I've listened to people say that vehicle emissions don't matter, because climate science isn't real.

And I've listened to people say that we mustn't reduce traffic, because that might inconvenience drivers.

I've listened, and I'm still waiting to hear a single effective alternative to low traffic.

New stickers for the Bridge Club crate...
A photo of the front end view of a bike with a pink crate on the front rack. There are stickers on the crate: a black, white and yellow one from The War on Cars, a Gaza Sunbirds sticker, and a Trans Rights sticker from Sweet Cowboy Blues.

This afternoon's #cyclecommute was a lot drier than this morning's!

Here’s a poem called ‘English Roundabouts’.
English Roundabouts

They’re making the roundabouts great again
by painting the flag of St George
to keep our circular road systems safe
from the dark, satanic hordes.

What do they want? Patriotic junctions!
When do they want them? Before it’s too late.
Good old-fashioned English roundabouts,
as decreed by Alfred the Great.

Behold the sacred intersection,
this blessed plot, this septic isle.
English roundabouts for English people,
draped in red and white and bile.

St George is cross, as well he may be –
whipped-up hate, he’s seen before.
Give way to the right, the road signs rage,
and the far right most of all.

Last night, a group of us met at Higger Tor to celebrate a couple of big birthdays. Rangers came to investigate, because they thought our battery powered lantern was a fire. I don't think we were quite what they were expecting to find...they were certainly entertained!
A photo of the sunset, seen from Higger Tor. The low cloud is lit up with golden sunlight, and there is a large bank of grey cloud in the sky above. A photo of people standing on a rock under a night sky. They are lit up by the blue light coming from a mini karaoke machine.

Road crashes cost lives and money.

Official figures calculate crashes in Sheffield cost £127m a year.

That’s £2.5m every week.

£350k, day in, day out.

It’s not expensive to fix this. It’s expensive not to.

Visiting St Botolph's church in Boston. I love that there's a 'cleaning in progress' sign at the centre of the labyrinth.
A photo of a blue and green labyrinth on the floor of a church. There are information boards nearby. At the centre of the labyrinth is a yellow 'cleaning in progress' sign.

One last little jolly before the start of term...

I'm cycling from home in Sheffield to @greenbeltfestival.bsky.social - leg one (to Loughborough) complete! I've done it before, but not alone. As someone who struggles with anxiety, and who finds navigating tricky, this is really a big deal. Celebrating with a Firepot pouch and Aldi fake Pop Tarts.

The Bridge Club in cargo bike mode today. The crate is attached to the pizza rack with a Blue Lug X Strap, which works really well, and is easily removable when not needed.

In a change to our original holiday plans, we went to the Lake District via train and bus. We had a good time, even if no bikes were involved. We bought Kendal Mint Cake in Kendal, where they just call it Mint Cake.
A photo of a white human with pink hair and sunglasses. They are wearing swimming gear and standing on the shore of Ullswater in the Lake District. The lake and hills can be seen in the background. A photo of a tree-lined shoreline, taken from the middle of Ullswater. The trees and cloudy sky are reflected in calm water. There is low cloud over the hills in the background. A photo of a green, hilly landscape, taken from across a valley. The sky above is pale blue and there are white clouds. A photo of a quiet lane, taken in the evening. There is a dry stone wall on one side of the lane, and a tree on the other. There is a person in the foreground, walking away from the camera. They are wearing a green top and trousers, and they are carrying an orange rucksack.

In a coffee shop in Windermere, listening to one gen z barista explain the plot of Bill and Ted to the other gen z barista. Had never considered how gloriously nuts it is. So glad I was a teenager in the 90s.
