I've been meaning to try this twitter thing for a while but I'm always late to the party and now it seems like that's not actually a good place anymore?

Let's build hyper-personalized AI-powered software that avoids the attention hijacking anti-patterns that defined so much of the last decade of software design - here's our manifesto with principles on how we can do that - more thoughts on my blog: simonwillison.net/2025/Dec/5/r...

Very true. And if you are working with AI, cultivate this in your own life.

Seek out ways to uplift your peers. Create community, openness, and compassion with all of your work. Soften your heart daily. Temper your sense of jealousy and competition.

You can become something larger than yourself.
If AI companies want to use humanity’s bodies of work for free to train models and then turn a profit, then they should pay for UBI for humanity. That seems like a reasonable compromise. But they absolutely shouldn’t get one without the other.

Sadly, we're only able to remember minority mistakes.

The mistakes of majorities are shadowy, elusive, as hard to remember as last night's dreams. Come to think of it, were they mistakes at all? No, on second thought, it was very complicated at the time, and perhaps we were right in principle.

My bipartisan IRS MATH Act with Senator Bill Cassidy is now law.

Now, if you mess up your taxes, the IRS has to tell you where you made a mistake and how to fix it.

No more spending a fortune on lawyers or hours to find errors.

That means fewer headaches and more money in your pocket.

Claude Code for VS Code really ought to have a way to open the current conversation as a Markdown document in an editor. It's easier to copy and paste out that way, and particularly when LaTeX comes up it's easier to read as well.

After years of useless posture advice ("imagine a string pulling you up"???), the only technique that's ever worked for me is to imagine there are laser beams coming out of your nipples and aim for people's heads. It works, and people cannot tell you're doing it

can we not use watchtower? i feel like forced automated updates like this can very easily be used for malicious purposes
IF YOU ARE RUNNING YOUR OWN PDS I am sorry but I am about to make a change to our docker compose.yaml to switch to a fork of the watchtower service that handles updates -- see github.com/bluesky-soci...

unfortunately, upstream is now unmaintained and we can't push this out any more cleanly. thanks!
switch to watchtower fork by axfelix · Pull Request #289 · bluesky-social/pds
I normally don't switch to a 3rd party fork lightly due to maintenance implications, but this seems like the right move here: containrrr/watchtower#2122 Tested that the fork was able to update ...

Hey y'all self-hosting your own PDS: if it's using the bluesky-social/pds install, you'll want to take a look at this PR and apply the changes to the /pds/docker-compose.yml file in your install to ensure you always stay up to date with new releases.

I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression
The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.

Coding with an AI assistant still scratches the coding itch for me because the part that the assistant is going to do in a way that pisses me off is exactly the part I'll enjoy explaining in greater and greater detail until it understands the obvious revelation it is overlooking, or proves I'm dumb.

What if Valve just stumbles in to building AI devices for people?

They already make user-friendly devices centered around a powerful and cost effective GPU
High-speed, high-cost is for working with humans in real time. Brett Victor showed us the magic you get from extremely responsive interfaces.

You'll have an AI collaborator running on your own GPU.
