"Arin's future was foretold at birth: they would be neither girl nor boy, and a witch besides..."

A reader quote from Goodreads:
"Occasionally, we come across a book that exceeds our expectations in marvelous ways"
- Shannon Massey

Images of the covers for two books:

A MEMORY OF BLOOD AND MAGIC:
Two people riding mules at the edge of a cliff in the foreground, facing away into the distance. One is pointing across a densely forested valley to distant cliffs where a ruined tower rises against a blue and pink sky.
The title of the book fills the cover in a smooth gradient from purple to blood red, with circular tracery extending from the letters serifs and ascenders to form a web of intersecting paths.

A MEMORY OF WAR AND SOLACE:
Two people riding at the top of a hill in the foreground, facing away into the distance. One rides a gray mule, the other a horse. Down rolling hills to a distant valley, a dark fortification stands, surrounded by the campfires and purple and orange banners of an army in black. The sun is setting in the distance.
The title of the book fills the cover in a smooth gradient from pinks to oranges, with circular tracery extending from the letters serifs and ascenders to form a web of intersecting paths.

I'd write more. And I'd take on more therapy clients pro bono or at a very low rate.

The number of times I've heard that what education is has to change because AI! When people say this to me now, I just say, "no." Usually they stop talking for ten seconds because no one is ever telling them no, and that's the whole problem
tedmccormick.bsky.social
The basic structure of so much commentary, some in the guise of academic study, reduces to:

(1) generative AI products are detrimental to the goals of education

(2) therefore, the goals of education must change.

Without the tacit axiom that AI has authority behind it, that just doesn’t follow.

It's now considered controversial to fight the KKK in a video game.
Alt text: A tweet from DiscussingFilm (@DiscussingFilm) reads: “Ubisoft canceled an ‘ASSASSINS CREED’ game set in the post–Civil War era. • Featured a Black Assassin who was formerly a slave • Players would fight the emerging KKK • Leadership canceled it after concerns with U.S. political climate & Yasuke backlash.” The source link is listed as “gamefile.news/p/scoop-ubisof…”. Below the text are two images side by side: on the left, a hooded Assassin in white and red armor from the Assassin’s Creed series; on the right, the red Assassin’s Creed logo on a plain background. As soon as we start accepting "proving innocence" into our vernacular, we start normalizing really insidious and dangerous shit, especially now when that is the language being used by this administration to racially profile people.

I see a lot of people saying that a person charged with a crime deserves the chance to prove their innocence.

Please stop doing this because you have it backwards and this is really important.

It is ALWAYS the government's burden to prove a person guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Libs of Tiktok, Elon Musk, and Robbie Starbuck put everything they had into trying to push a boycott of Netflix over LGBTQ characters in their shows.

Netflix ignored them and the stock is back up. Turns out bots don't actually cancel accounts.

I guess the good news is that we don't have to wait too long... only 3 weeks 🫤

They were bought by Canva. While they are promising not to enshitify, we shall see. From what I've been able to find, part of the big announcement for v3 is that there will be a fully unified single file format, possibly fully unified suite (which was nearly there with v2) + some Canva integration
knbrindle.com
And they seem to have stopped selling the current versions (at least I can't find the product pages anymore), so... 🤷 who knows. It might be as amazing as they're promising, or might be another sad footnote and dead-end software company 🤷

I've been using Affinity Designer/Photos/Publisher for a few years, and it's amazing software. One-time purchase for major version updates, and under $100 for the whole suite.

BUT... they just announced some future thing they're being really cagey about: affinity.serif.com/en-us/

@safety.bsky.app this post is not intolerant. I don't appreciate how you're gaslighting this community every ten seconds.

One of the good things about this site was a public agreement that truth and accuracy matter. Do you know how painful it is to see you endorse the disintegration of meaning?

If bluesky does go up in flames, I would like to make a suggestion: maybe try making the next social media website a different colour.
I mean, the blue probably isn't the thing driving the CEOs to madness, but it's worth checking.
Facebook with its blue colour scheme. Twitter with its blue colour scheme. Bluesky with its blue colour scheme. Tumblr with its blue colour scheme.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections
