It's not Thanksgiving in Canada but we still get great deals. The best I've seen is six months of CBC Gem for a dollar/month. Live TV and home of many hard to find titles like The Sweet Hereafter, which I've had on my list since glowing praise on the Sarah Polley episode of Team Deakins.

I tend to agree but it's also hard to rank the original trilogy cause we're not even all discussing the same movies.

I think there's a very good argument that Last Jedi is the best Star Wars movie on Disney Plus.

Honestly Waymos should have this dude.

Watching Total Recall. No pun intended, but I can't remember whether I've actually seen this start to finish before.

But, like, it's always after midnight.

It's entirely available to Jake to just stick with Evelyn and her daughter, to protect them and get them out.

People often miss these types of moments in movies, because in them people are failing precisely due to acting as though they are the hero in a movie.

Between Bonnie and Clyde and Chinatown, the peak of New Hollywood is bookended by a gorgeous man escaping fisticuffs in a threshold by jumping on the running board of a speeding vehicle driven by an impossibly stunning and brilliant Faye Dunaway.

Cutting to the back of Jake's head to start this scene is such a masterstroke. With the beautiful camera pan across the office to boot.

And it makes the huge bandage reveal so much more effective when we finally get it.

Nicholson is in his mid-thirties in Chinatown. This performance, capturing the charactersl's vanity and insecurity and everything, couldn't be all it is if he didn't show signs of aging.

Countless 21st century movies, with impossible teeth and hairlines and such, are held back by this.

Thought experiment: this actress is virtually only in this scene. Would it be wise to only give her the script for this scene, and let her think she is playing Mrs. Mulwray?
Then you'd have an actress pretending to be Mrs. Mulwray, which is what you need.
Only one right answer to this Q.

Pauline Kael argued wrt Double Indemnity that "except for the three stars, the cast is just barely adequate."

While I see the argument with much of the supporting cast, I think Porter Hall's Mr. Jackson is an absolute delight.

I've only seen this start to finish once before, though I've caught pieces a number of times on TCM. Looking forward to watching it properly again.

Ordinary People screening as part of TIFF's members weekend and in honour of Redford.

Going to the movies in the morning is so great. Try it if you haven't.

Happy weekend, #TCMParty. Yesterday's episode of Fresh Air is worth checking out:

Around American Thanksgiving I watch The Last Waltz at least once, and it's genuinely a quasi-religious experience. A perfect film.

How Scorsese made it surreptitiously over the Thanksgiving break for New York New York (check out the Mr. Scorsese doc if you haven't) only makes it better.

Boomerang! 1947.

I want to read Kazan's autobiography, but I think it's better to complete his filmography first. If you can avoid it, you never want your first interaction with a movie to be other than the thing itself.

Wait? That's a thing??

Like if one of my colleagues is out sick, I can go home in solidarity?

Just because it's too early for It's a Wonderful Life, doesn't mean it's too early for James Stewart.

Also, Vertigo 70mm next month at TIFF. So exciting!

My first ever Roger Corman directed movie.

I've seen many films he produced - overwhelmingly helmed by legends and bad - but never seen one he directed start to finish. The bits I've seen haven't left me hopeful, but let's give it a shot.

Looking forward to it.

I haven't seen this in twenty years, probably (and I still clearly remember some of the images, which is the ultimate test).
