I am once again reminded that I'm the weird one for thinking that database design and editing is pretty straightforward and doable.
Boston, 1872. A quick search got no results on either "health-lift parlors" or the proprietor's name. Moderate exercise? Meditation? I have no clue.

The best American flag is the battle flag of Tecumseh Sherman’s 23rd Corps, made from the tattered remains of Confederate banners.

Besides all that, how is it December already?

I think we have a winner.
I named my fists Thoughts and Prayers because they don't do anything.
I named my fists the Two Ronnies because it's goodnight from me and it's goodnight from them.

This is especially true for Right Wing Authoritarian personalities. They prioritize "normal" and feel safest when their choices are simple (or made for them) and conform to the group. That level of comfort is easily threatened. Liberals tend to like novelty and choice and difference. Good video.
This is actually quite brilliant, up to and including the final sentence 🔥

I realized today that I'm probably the only person at [redacted] who can read handwriting, which is a *problem* when the work involves the history of specific locations, and manuscript sources about them.
So, the week after next, I'll be getting on a plane and flying to visit an archive where I'll <checks notes> waste my valuable time trying to read some handwritten documents, and you know what? That's totally fine by me.

2 pages of the 1872 mortality register for Gloucester, MA list the men lost at sea. Here, "Lost in Sch Messenger on Western Banks," 12 men. On the schooner Franklin Snow, 14 men. Two each from the George O. Hovey and the John Smith. On and from the Matchless, 14.

I learnt a new word! (zugswang). The rest of this is depressing but convincingly obvious. (To everyone but most economists, apparently.)
"The Valley of Death: Why $100,000 Is the New Poor
Once I established that $136,500 is the real break-even point, I ran the numbers on what happens to a family climbing the ladder toward that number"

One moment that sticks in my mind from the early Robert B Parker Spenser novels is when Spenser notices an attractive lady and then realizes that she's a teenager. He immediately looks away and banishes her from his mind.

It's a throwaway moment in a book series that's a lot about how to be a man.

Ya know, when non-elite people pull this kind of stuff it's reported as a sign of their moral degeneracy. I guess now we know why.
Keith Olbermann is now also a character in this? The NYT newsroom was apparently Woodstock but with no music and really bad drugs

Before the midterms of 1866, President Andrew Johnson called his congressional opponents traitors and said they should be hanged.

Voters were so profoundly moved by his words... that they gave his opponents a supermajority in Congress, and the nation got the Fourteenth Amendment.

/13 Why? For proximity to power. For prestige. For attention.

Some tongues were made to praise God. Some tongues were made to sing. Some were made for poetry, some for prose, some to agitate and some to soothe.

But some tongues were made for the boot.

"By any consistent standard, if Summers is unfit to work for each of these institutions [from which he resigned], he is equally unfit to teach at our school. Harvard should not be the only institution in America where Summers remains above reproach."
