Trying to find traces of WW2 in Berlin and other places but also interested in other historical remnants. The long-term goal is to the read my city like a book.

Usually my own photos.

Also into genealogy.

This is going to be a thread about my favourite resources (a work in progress). The main thread is going to list categories (e.g. maps) and there will side-threads listing examples. Keep your fingers crossed this works! Here goes nothing…
@dznsza.bsky.social Hallo! Kann man im Dokumentationszentrum auch für Adressen überprüfen, ob dort Zwangsarbeit stattgefunden oder ein Lager bestanden hat? Es gibt zwar Listen, vielleicht sind diese aber nicht aktuell.

For those interested in the quality of prints of digital photos: Left: Printed by a machine in a local Rossmann store. Right: A (smaller) print I ordered over Rossmann (took about a week). The left one is a bit too contrasty which is fine in this scene. The right one, well, is the right one.

Still thinking about that moment when I walked in to this “secret bathroom” and gasped.
I stumbled upon it in my research some time ago and couldn’t believe there are still places like that around, that look literally frozen in time.
Oh, and the mirror is almost 200 years old.

Berlin makes students take an exam that apart from the usual assignments includes a listening task of 45 minutes. It has taken me maybe 5-6 hours to find clips and cut them. I still have not prepared any questions/tasks so this will take me another hour or two. #NothingToDoOnASaturday

Wait a second! If a building in SE Berlin-Kreuzberg was damaged on its WNW facade (not so much its roof) in WW2 and it is not listed in the damage reports - could it be that it was not a bomb but a shell from the last few days of war???

Lots of ways to be a man! Problems can lie in fitting into societal expectations of 'manliness', and men can be crap at dealing with that. I've never wanted to hurt myself, but many do, and a British man kills himself every two hours. It's why I support www.mensmindsmatter.org #InternationalMensDay

ist wirklich für Berlin eine traurige Geschichte !

The ruin of the Franziskanerkirche (Klosterstr., Berlin-Mitte), a church from the 13th century that was destroyed in an air raid on 3 April 1945, is all that remains of the Franziskanerkloster, a monastery often referred to as “Graues Kloster” (grey m.). (B/W pic: info panel on site).

In Berlin, one does often not know whether a relative lived in the residential building facing the street or in the building(s) behind it (same address). With the help of Histomapberlin.de I was able to determine that a relative had lived in what we call Hinterhaus (rear building) as the front (…)

“Sich regen bringt Segen” (moving brings blessings) is from a poem by Friedrich Rückert from 1838. It appears on what looks like a ghost sign at Ritterstr. 2a (Berlin-Kreuzberg), one of the few buildings that survived WW2, especially the air raid on 3 Feb. 1945 that devasteted the neighbourhood.

After asking my students if they remember Mr. Bean & Dr. House (only a bit of misdirection), I showed them the last 5 mins. of Black Adder (WW1). When it was finished, I could see & feel that they were touched by it. Told them that 11:11 on 11 Nov. in the UK is very different from German Fasching.

Does it appear far-fetched that a public school with a partly religious background was less prone to following Nazi ideology?

The border crossing point at Oberbaumbrücke on the evening of 10 Nov. 1989 - the 2nd day of when the Berlin Wall was suddenly open. It is a collage I made shortly after and as I did not want to rip off the photos, I scanned the page, adjusted each image a bit and rebuilt the collage digitally.
